Vacations are a time to vary your routine

As I See It

By Diana Dolecki-

It won't be long now.
We are leaving tomorrow to go visit the grandchildren. My husband and I are so antsy we can barely sit still until it is time to pack our stuff and leave.
All the important things are already taken care of. The papers have been stopped and arrangements have been made for a babysitter for Gracie, the calico cat. The car has been serviced but it still needs to be cleaned out and loaded. I have made impossibly long lists and secondary lists of things I want to get done before we leave.
My lists have a few things crossed off but not so many that I would feel comfortable with what will surely be left undone.
By the time you read this we will have been back home for almost a week. For now, I want to GO. It takes every bit of willpower I have not to grab my husband and demand we leave right this minute.
We are in dire need of a vacation and some grandchild time. We are both ready to escape our daily routines and settle into someone else's life for awhile. We are tired.
Everybody needs a change of routine now and then. The brain and the body tend to dull and soften when nothing varies from day to day. We crave excitement and change even as we luxurate in the sameness and comfort of the routines we have created for ourselves.
The thing about a good vacation is that it doesn't last long enough to become familiar. We may contemplate a drastic change in our lives whereby we pull up roots and live on a deserted island for the rest of our lives, but the truth is most of us crave the routines we have created for ourselves.
As much as we deny it, we enjoy going to work every day. We like eating the same things days after day. We like going to the same places and talking about the same things as we always do.
At some point all the sameness gets old and we crave the excitement of newness. We need to feel alive again.
We're leaving tomorrow to visit the grandchildren and I can barely wait to get going.[[In-content Ad]]
