UNION CITY — Ben Vance put Union City Westside away. And it only took him one quarter to do it.
Vance scored three first-quarter touchdowns Tuesday night, leading the East Jay eighth grade football team to a 28-8 victory over Westside. The Chief seventh graders also defeated Westside, 6-0.
Vance opened the scoring with a 60-yard run off right tackle early in the first quarter. He went the opposite way for a 36-yard scoring run later in the opening period and added a 7-yard scoring run before the first-quarter buzzer.
East Jay got two-point conversions after his second and third scoring runs for a 22-0 lead. The Chiefs added another score on a 2-yard run by Alex Langenkamp in the third quarter, and Westside scored in the fourth for the final margin.
Vance racked up 147 yards rushing on just seven carries. Adam Coats added 58 yards on 10 carries.
Langenkamp completed two passes for 30 yards, including a 24-yarder to Scott Houston. Michael Stephen led the team with five tackles.
The seventh grade game came down to the closing minutes as the teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first three quarters. East Jay finally scored when D.J. Teeple connected with Brendan Reed on a 22-yard pass with just 2:45 remaining.
Teeple finished with 38 rushing yards on eight carries. He also led the team with 11 tackles, followed by Stetson Petro with nine.
Reed completed two passes for 62 yards, with the other reception going to Drew Houck.[[In-content Ad]]
