Vectren leaves gas marketing
Business Roundup
Vectren Corp. has decided to get out of the natural gas marketing business and has sold off certain assets of a jointly-owned subsidiary that had been a money-loser for the company in recent years, The Evansville Courier and Press reported this week.
The Evansville-based utility announced it had sold the net assets of ProLiance Energy to a subsidiary of Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners. Vectren is a 61-percent owner of ProLiance, and Indianapolis-based Citizens Energy Group owns the other 39 percent.
Historically, ProLiance had made money by buying and reselling natural gas. But as natural gas prices have become low and stable in recent years, the old business model of making money from price swings no longer works reliably.
The transaction is expected to be cash-flow neutral to Vectren, the company said.
Vectren provides natual gas service to Dunkirk.
