Vesperry is lone Patriot to reach consolation (02/04/05)

Swim sectional

FORT WAYNE — Last season Jay County qualified just one swimmer to a championship race in the girls sectional meet. This year, thanks mostly to the move to Homestead, it got just one into a consolation final.

With the ninth-ranked host Spartans grabbing three of the top six positions in every event at Thursday’s preliminaries, Lindsey Vesperry was the lone Patriot to finish in the top 12 and earn a consolation berth in the 12-team Homestead sectional.

Rachel McKee was the only swimmer to make the finals last year, doing so in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle.

South Adams managed to get one swimmer, sophomore Haleigh Lehman, into a championship race and five others in consolation races.

Vesperry, a junior, earned the only consolation spot for Jay County with an 11th-place effort in the 100-yard freestyle. She finished just in front of the Starfires’ Margaret Beymer (1-minute, 2.82 seconds) with a time of 1:01.82.

Vesperry is also on two of the Patriots’ three relay teams which will be back in action in Saturday’s sectional finals at Homestead. She teamed with Brittany Laux, Julie Sours and Amber Kelly in finishing 10th in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:16.85 and joined Sours, Ashley Imel and Andrea Collins for 10th in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2:00.32.

Kelly, Imel, Laux and Collins were also 10th in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a season-best time of 4:36.15.

Lehman scored the top finish for South Adams in the 100-yard butterfly, just making the championship race as she placed sixth in 1:05.34. She was also on both Starfire relay teams which made championship races.

She, Ashley Gresla, Robyn Habegger and Chlesea Yoder were fifth in the girls 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.48. She teamed with Yoder, Beymer and Talitha Maven for sixth in the 400-yard freestyle in 4:09.25.

Yoder made the consolation finals in two events. She missed the title race by just 14 hundredths of a second by finishing seventh in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.32, and placed 11th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:08.34.

Gresla, Maven and Shannon Muselman all made their consolation races in the same event. Muselman was eighth in the 500-yard freestyle in 6:07.83, followed by Maven in 10th (6:14.75) and Gresla in 12th (6:17.62).

Habegger, Channing Yoder, Whitney Liechty and Courtney Hewitt teamed to reach the consolation finals of the 200-yard medley relay by finishing eighth in 2:12.35.

Sectional action continues Saturday with diving preliminaries beginning at 9 a.m. Swimming and diving finals will start at 2 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
