Viking freshman dominates Jay Co. softball (05/04/05)

Jay County roundup

HUNTINGTON — The Patriots couldn’t get a hit off of Katie Hackney Tuesday. Then again, no one else has been very succesful against her either.

The Jay County softball team managed three hits after Hackney left the game, but still lost to the Huntington North Vikings 8-0.

Hackney, a freshman, was perfect through the first five innings against Jay County, striking out 14 of the 15 batters she faced. That effort brought her hitless streak to 10 innings as she also no-hit Muncie Central Saturday. She hasn’t allowed a run in at least 17 innings, having thrown a two-hit shutout against Logansport last week.

The Vikings got the only runs they would need in the first inning, scoring three times.

Jay County (4-9) managed three hits — one each by Trisha Champ, Erica Clark and Lisa Weitzel — in the final three innings off reliever Rebekah Gumbiner.

Brittany Logue took the loss, giving up eight runs — five earned — on six hits.
