COLUMBUS, Ohio and BLOOMINGTON — Mindy Vogel and Joseph Vormohr had both hoped for career-best efforts and a chance at the state podium, but it was not to be Saturday.
Vogel finished 12th in the 800-meter run at the OHSAA Track and Field State Tournament at Ohio State University’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. Vormohr competed in the shot put at Indiana University in Bloomington, finishing 25th at the IHSAA Track and Field State Tournament.
After third-place efforts at both the Minster district and Piqua regional, Vogel entered the state competition as the No. 10 seed. The top eight in each event earn state medals.
Her 12th-place time was 2-minutes, 25.54 seconds in a young state field. While senior Danielle Sidell of Collins West was the state champion at 2:14.06, more than half of the 16 finalists were freshman or sophomores.
Vogel, a sophomore, had her best time of the season — 2:22.24 — at the regional meet.
Vormohr thought his season was over after a fourth-place finish in the shot put at the Indianapolis North Central regional. But he got a call-back days later as his regional throw earned one of the three remaining positions in the state field.
The senior finished 25th out of 27 at the state meet with a toss of 48 feet, 9.75 inches. His best of the year also came in the regional round at 52 feet, 9 inches.
“He wasn’t happy with the distance, but as far as his performances, he felt good,” said JCHS coach Greg Garringer of Vormohr, who was also named to the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Academic All-State team. “He was glad to be a part of it. It was exciting to be down there.”
Eric Werskey of Seymour won the shot put state title at 65 feet, 6 inches, edging Union County’s Stephen Benjamin by one inch.[[In-content Ad]]
