Volunteers sought for competition
Taking Note
The Stars in the Park Talent Competition is in need of assistants for auditions.
There are 52 entries for the competition. Auditions will be held Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, June 27, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Jay Community Center.
Help will also be needed at the quarterfinals on July 18 and 25 and Aug. 1 and 8 and for the finals on Aug. 16.
Anyone wanting to volunteer may call Vicki Tague at the Jay County Chamber of Commerce at (260) 726-4481.
Canning program
A free program will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Jay County Historical Society Museum, 903 E. Main St. in Portland.
Karen Vincent, of the Minnetrista Center in Muncie, will discuss the Ball Corporation and Ball canning jars. Rare jars will be available for viewing.
Library news
Two gardening classes will be held at Jay County Public Library as part of its summer reading program “Groundbreaking Reads.”
A class for beginners will be held Monday at 6 p.m. and an intermediate class will be Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The classes will be led by a master gardener from Purdue Extension. For more information, call (260) 726-4707.
The program Dead & Living Dead will be held Wednesday. Make a mummy or zombie from materials provided. To register, call the library at (260) 726-7890 or email Linda at [email protected].
Dean’s list
Area students were named to the spring dean’s list at Manchester University.
Evan West, rural Dunkirk, a sophomore exercise and sport science major.
Holly Rittenhouse, Portland, a senior elementary education major.
Megan Taylor, Portland, a sophomore biology major.
Amber Melick, Geneva, who graduated cum laude with a major in biology and environmental studies in May.
