OSSIAN — Cori Vormohr didn’t waste any time.
The Jay County freshman put her name in the record books in her first career meet, breaking the school mark in the 200-yard individual medley. She was the lone Patriot to score a victory at the Norwell Invitational, where the team finished eighth out of nine teams with 78 points.
Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger won the meet with 250 points, Oak Hill was second with 236.5 and the host Knights were third with 212. Bellmont finished seventh, just 1.5 points ahead of Jay County.
Vormohr showed no mercy on her family as she began her high school career, taking the individual medley record away from her cousin Taylor Fullenkamp. She broke the mark by 22 hundredths of a second, finishing in 2-minutes, 21.63 seconds.
She added a second victory as she reached the wall first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:04.61, just 27 hundredths of a second slower than Abby Arnold’s record time.
Only one other Patriot posted a finish in the top 12 as Lindsey Vesperry was seventh in both the 50 and 100 freestyle. Vesperry was the only Jay County swimmer to swim in an individual consolation or championship race at last year’s Homestead sectional.
Vormohr, Vesperry, Ivy Simons and Briann Saxman teamed to place fifth in the 200 medley relay.
Jay County will open its dual meet season Tuesday when it visits Muncie Southside at 6 p.m.
Winter team gets 2 wins
NOBLESVILLE — Sophie Bader and Sam Miller each turned in victories as the Jay County Winter Swim Team competed at the Noblesville Ice Breaker Invitational this weekend.
Bader helped the girls team to a couple of wins, including her individual triumph in the 8-and-younger girls 25-yard butterfly. She also teamed with Anne Vormohr, Rhianon Mills and Cori Stone to take first in the medley relay.
Miller earned his win in the 13-14-year-old boys 100 breaststroke.
Vormohr added seven runner-up finishes, Bader was second in two events, and Alysha Miller and Jesse Sutton each finished second once.[[In-content Ad]]
