FORT WAYNE — Area swimmers in championship races Saturday will be few and far between.
Just three — Cori Vormohr of Jay County and Haleigh Lehman and Jessica Sharp of South Adams — earned a spot in the top six at the sectional preliminaries hosted by Homestead at Fort Wayne’s Summit Middle School. The No. 6 host Spartans took three of the six available positions in championship races in every individual event, and finished one-two-three in five of them.
Vormohr led the Patriots, breaking her own school record in the 100-yard butterfly by five hundredths of the second with a time of 1-minute, 3.28 seconds. The freshman was fourth in the race behind three Homestead swimmers.
Lehman also qualified in the butterfly, finishing right behind Vormohr with a time of 1:05.13.
Vormohr finished fourth in her other race as well, again following three Homestead swimmers in the 200 individual medley in 2:21.98.
Sharp, a freshman, reached the finals in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:49.38.
South Adams reached the finals in all three relays while the Patriots qualified one relay team.
The top relay finish for the Starfires came in the 200 freestyle event where Lehman and Sharp teamed with Megan Myers and Jalisa Balsiger to finish fourth in 1:49.74. Lehman, Myers, Channing Yoder and Courtney Hewitt were fifth in the 200 medley relay in 2:06.95, and Lehman, Sharp, Talitha Maven and Margaret Beymer teamed for fifth in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:07.65.
