BERNE — Anne Vormohr spent the winter helping rewrite the Jay County High School record book. She got started doing the same for the summer squad Thursday.
Vormohr broke two records as she led the Jay County Summer Swim Team to a 659-538 victory over host South Adams.
The JCHS sophomore, who was a state medalist in the backstroke last season, finished in 1 minute, 3.38 seconds, in the 100-meter freestyle and 1:11.34 in the 100 backstroke to shatter both team records. Abby Arnold held the previous marks of 1:04 and 1:12.9 respectively.
Vormohr also won the long freestyle, and Sophie Bader added victories in the butterfly, individual medley and breaststroke as the cousins swept the 15-and-older girls events.
Sophie’s sisters Mara, Eliza and Alex all added three victories apiece, with Mara first in the 8-and-younger girls butterfly, individual medley and breaststroke. Eliza took the 9-10-year-old girls long freestyle, butterfly and individual medley, and Alex was first in the 13-14-year-old girls long freestyle, butterfly and individual medley.
Christopher McDowell earned victories in the 11-12-year-old boys long freestyle, backstroke and short freestyle, and Josh Lykins was first in the 15-and-older boys short freestyle, butterfly and long freestyle.
Adding two wins apiece for Jay County were Ashlyn Dow, Damian Hicks, Tayler Smeltzer, Sydney Mathias and Alex LeMaster.
Rally falls short
FORT WAYNE — The Portland Rockets rallied after going hitless for nearly eight innings, but their comeback fell short Thursday in a 4-3 loss to the Fort Wayne Jackers.
Former Rocket Garrett Wiejak held Portland hitless for 7 2/3 innings before walks turned the tide in the eighth inning. Dalton Tinsley drew the first walk, stole second base and scored when Logan Hug finally slapped a single to right-center field. Two walks loaded the bases for Chris Miller, who doubled off the fence in left field to pull the Rockets to within one.
However, the Jackers came up with a strikeout to end the inning and held on for the one-run win in the Fort Wayne League opener for both squads.
Michael Caley suffered the loss, giving up three runs on five hits in five innings. Nick McCoy allowed one run in three innings of relief.
The Rockets (2-3-1) will open the home portion of their schedule with a doubleheader against Harley Brandt at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Nichols leads Mets
Kinsey Litton came up big for Yellow on Wednesday as Redkey Junior League Major softball featured a couple of one-run games.
Litton went 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs to lead Yellow to a 9-8 victory over Blue, while Red knocked off Yellow 6-5. Maggie Pryor had two hits, including a triple, in the win for Red.
Ava Miller finished a perfect 4-for-4 Yellow to a win in Minor softball.
In Minor baseball Wednesday, Parker Nichols finished 3-for-3 with a double and two runs for the Mets, while Corey Lennington and Sean Bailey each had three hits and two runs for the Reds.
Brinnin Wasson paced the Cubs in Major baseball with three double and three runs, and Daniel Fugiett had two hits and two runs for the Reds.[[In-content Ad]]
