Vormohr wins IHSAA Centennial Scholarship (05/05/06)

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana High School Athletic Association has honored one of Jay County’s own as one of 10 outstanding high school student athletes.

Joseph Vormohr, a JCHS senior, was selected to be one of 10 recipients of the IHSAA Centennial Scholarship. The winners of the $2,500 scholarship were announced in a press release Thursday.

Vormohr is a four-year letter winner in track and field, and a three-year letter winner in both football and swimming. He ranks first in the JCHS senior class and is a member of the National Honor Society and student council.

Scholarship winners were selected from more than 150 applicants, who were nominated by their school’s principal.

It is awarded to students who are “well-rounded, positive role models who have demonstrated excellence in academics, school and community involvement, character, sportsmanship and citizenship.”

Golfers score split

BLUFFTON — The Patriot boys golf team defeated the host Bluffton Tigers, but fell just short of the Bellmont Braves Thursday.

Jay County scored a 178, finishing two strokes behind the Braves. Bluffton was third with a 191.

Adam Gray paced the Patriots, as he opened and closed his round with pars. He added two more on the par-3 sixth hole and the par-5 seventh to earn match medalist honors with a 42.

Gray Suman had the only birdie for JCHS on the par-5 fifth hole as he finished with a 44. Ben Gasca shot 45, Josh Hall added a 47 and Chris Shannon finished at 51.

Tennis blanked again

MONROE — Still missing their No. 1 singles player because of injury, the Patriot girls tennis team took their third straight shutout in a 5-0 loss to the Adams Central Jets Thursday.

The closest match came at No. 2 doubles where Tiffani Bickel and Cindy Muhlenkamp fell 6-4, 6-2 to Jessica Bertschy and Jessica R. Andrews. Jessica Muhlenkamp and Megan Knittle dropped the other doubles match 6-0, 6-1 to Annie King and Megan Smith.

In singles action Carissa Wilkins fell 6-2, 6-2 to Rachel Barger, Megan Adams lost 6-0, 6-2 to Ashley Fiechter and Heather Ayers dropped 6-0, 6-0 to Natalie Mitchel.

Jay County tied the junior varsity match with the Jets 4-4 with singles victories from Caitlin Dunn, Betsy Knittle and Brittany Lewis. Megan Huntsman and Briann Saxman added a doubles win.[[In-content Ad]]
