MUNCIE — Joseph Vormohr was so good, it took a sectional record to beat him.

Vormohr, a Jay County senior, dominated the shot put at the Muncie Central sectional to win his second straight title. He finished second in the discus behind new sectional record holder James Franklin of the host Bearcats.

The effort from Vormohr accounted for more than a quarter of the Patriot points as the team finished fifth in the field of 12 with 67. Muncie Central ran away with the title with 134 points, followed by Muncie Southside (78.5), Muncie Burris (78) and Delta (77.5).

“I have a little bit of bitter-sweet feelings about it,” said JCHS coach Greg Garringer, who had hopes of a third-place finish, of the team effort. “I feel like we had a decent meet today, but there are still areas where we have holes ...”

Eight Jay County athletes finished in the top four of at least one event to earn a regional berth. They will compete at Indianapolis North Central Thursday at 6 p.m.

Vormohr scratched on his opening attempt in the discus, but was strong the rest of the way. All of his tosses in the shot put were right around the 50-foot mark, with his winning toss of 51 feet, 1 inch coming on his second attempt of the preliminaries.

“I thought it was good. I started out the season kind of shaky,” said Vormohr, noting his year turned when he switched from the spin technique to the glide. “It gave me some controlled throws rather than being wild and inconsistent. I’ve been confident the last two weeks.”

His second attempt in the discus went 152 feet to take a brief lead, but Central’s James followed with a 166. Vormohr pushed his distance to 155 feet, which placed second as Franklin broke the sectional record by a foot on his third throw at 170 feet, seven inches.

Vormohr will have a chance at a state berth in both events. He said he hopes to turn around the bad fortunes Jay County throwers have had at the regional meet over the last few seasons.

“I think I have the upper hand going in just because I’ve been there since my sophomore year,” said Vormohr. “I’ve got a lot of experience and I know what to expect. This time I’m one of the guys whose been there.”

Freshman Dexter Shreve was the only other Patriot to qualify for the regional in two individual events, giving Jay County another strong sectional showing in the field events. Fighting a groin pull, he still managed a couple of third-place efforts.

Shreve cleared the high jump bar at five feet, 10 inches, two short of Union City’s Aaron Jones and Joseph Jones of Muncie Central. He turned in a jump of 19 feet, one-quarter inch in the long jump.

Justin Gilbert was the runner-up to Terrance Witzke of Burris in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 52.66 seconds.

Senior Denny Gardner and junior Mason Shreve turned in great effort in the 110 hurdles.

Gardner charged from the pack in the final 30 meters to place second in 17.65 seconds. Shreve was sixth in the preliminary round, but ran a steady race and edged Andy Stover of Winchester at the finish line by three hundredths of a second to take third in 17.85.

“I’m pretty happy with our hurdlers. That was a nice surprise,” said Garringer. “When they ran the dual over here Denny and Mason both had good times ... but then at conference the weather was not real good and they had poor times there. So it was (a matter of) what person was going to show up today. The right people showed up today.”

Jay County’s 4x400 relay team sat fifth through most of the race, and Justin Gilbert was sixth when he received the final hand-off from Micah Enyart. But Gilbert was ready.

The senior ran a smart — Garringer called it “blazing” — final leg, content to sit in behind the Monroe Central and Muncie Southside runners most of the way. Then he made his move in the final 90 meters, surging past Southside’s Dallin Shroyer and edging Witt Tyler of Monroe Central to earn a final regional berth.

The Patriot team of Gilbert, Enyart, Doug Murray and Alex Michael finished fourth in 3:37.75, just three hundredths ahead of the Monroe Central quartet.

Brandon Reynard placed sixth in the 200 dash and was eighth in the 100. Gilbert and Enyart turned in seventh-place efforts in the 100 and 400 respectively.

Chad Miller, Chris Moore, Josh Hawn and Murray teamed for seventh in the 4x800 relay.[[In-content Ad]]
