Walgreens tops August permits (09/06/2008)

August's building permit listing from the Jay/Portland Building and Planning Department is topped by an application for Portland's new Walgreens pharmacy.

A permit was applied for by Eugene Faigus of TFG Portland, LLC. for the new $1.5 million pharmacy located at 124 W. Votaw St. Construction is continuing on the new business, which will bring the drug store chain popular around the Midwest to the region.

Total cost estimates for 31 projects requiring permits in August was $2,125,200.

Sheriff speaks

The Mercer County Sheriff will speak to interested residents about how to identify and avoid scams. Sherriff Jeff Grey will speak at the Dine and Discover program sponsored by Mercer Health at Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater, Ohio.

The event takes place at 5 p.m. on Sept. 8.

Grey will discuss different aspects of how scams work and how to better deal with scam artists.

Reservations to the event were being made until Wednesday.

Company visit

An Austin, Texas-based company recently visited east central Indiana to scout a potential home for a new data center.

AngelouEconomics visited the region to evaluate development sites and survery the local communities as a possible site for a new date center being planned by the company.

The company was looking in Delaware County as a possible expansion site. The trip was organized by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation with funding from Duke Energy, Indiana Michigan Electric, Wabash Valley Power and area economic development organizations.

Forty-five years

A 45-year newspaperman from Bluffton retired this week.

Joe Smekens, who worked with the Bluffton News-Banner, kicked off his work boots for good Friday on his 65th birthday. Smekens, who delivered newspapers as a kid before coming to the News-Banner from the newsroom side, served for many years as the Bluffton publication's sports editor and managing editor.

And open house was held for the retiring employee Friday at the Timber Ridge Golf Course.[[In-content Ad]]
