Wanner leads SA over Braves

BERNE — Dustin Wanner carried the Starfires most of the way, and he and his teammates made enough free throws down the stretch to walk away with their third win.
Wanner’s 28 points, including the final foul shot with 33 seconds left, led the South Adams High School boys basketball team to a 57-54 victory Tuesday over the visiting Bellmont Braves.
The Starfires (3-5) fell behind by two with 2:53 left in the game, but Taylor LeFever responded by hitting four straight free throws to give them the lead for good. The teams traded foul shots with just over a minute to play, and Wanner split a pair with 33 seconds on the clock to push the advantage to three points.
The Braves’ Joe Baker and Brian Fullenkamp each missed 3-point attempts in the final 13 seconds as SAHS held on for the win.
Wanner hit 16-of-18 free-throw attempts as the Starfires outscored Bellmont 28-10 at the line. He also had six rebounds.
Trevor White added eight points and eight rebounds, and Scott Hoeppner finished with four assists.
Matt Chronister paced Bellmont with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Baker scored 15 points.
In junior varsity action, South Adams fell 31-25 to the Braves. Chase Mosser led the Starfires with 11 points.

SA tankers fall
BERNE — South Adams High School’s swim teams managed just a handful of wins Tuesday in a couple of losses to the Celina Bulldogs. The host Starfire boys lost 102-84, and the girls fell 107-79.
Erika Waugh was the lone double winner for the Starfires, picking up her first victory in the girls 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 3.74 seconds. She also took the top spot in the 500 freestyle by more than 40 seconds in 5:34.88.
Kara DeLong posted a winning time of 1:08.67 in the 100 backstroke.
Cole Farlow eked out a victory in the 50 freestyle for the SAHS boys, edging Kyle Menchhofer by just three hundredths of a second in 23.79. Jacob Werst took the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.56.

FR 7th rolls
UNION CITY — The Fort Recovery Middle School seventh grade boys basketball team stayed perfect Tuesday with a 44-18 victory over the Union City Indians. The eighth grade team lost 44-38.
Jackson Hobbs racked up 12 points for the seventh graders, who improved to 5-0. Darien Sheffer joined him in double figures with 10 points.
Dillon Whitacre scored seven points for the FRMS eighth graders (1-4). Xavier Shauver, Evan Schoen and Alex Schoen each scored six points.

Tribe girls lose
UNION CITY — Fort Recovery’s seventh grade girls basketball team lost 28-21 to Union City Tuesday, and the eighth graders lost 32-20.
Caitlyn Huelskamp scored nine points for the seventh graders, who led by two heading into the final quarter. Kirsten Jutte and Katie Stammen each added four points.
Tori Lennartz totaled eight points to pace the FRMS eighth grade squad. Cassidy Rammel and Haley Knapke each had four.[[In-content Ad]]
