The Patriots only wish they could have been as successful on the court as they were off.

Jay County High School's volleyball team raised about $4,000, all of which will be donated to the Jay County Cancer Society, for its cancer benefit match. But the Class 1A No. 5 Wes-Del Warriors proved too powerful as they topped the Patriots, who played in front of by far their largest home crowd of the season, 25-14, 25-10, 25-14.

"They wanted to play well in front of their crowd," said Medler of the fans, mostly clad in pink T-shirts sold as part of the fund-raising effort. "It's a tough team to play well against. They know where our weaknesses are and they were going to try to exploit them, and they did."

Abbey Scroggins put on the best such display for Wes-Del, torturing the Patriots with her jump serve in game two. She led the Warriors (19-5) on a 9-0 run to take a commanding 17-4 lead.

The junior six-footer accounted for half of her eight service points on her own as she nailed four aces, including three in a row during one stretch. She finished with six aces to set a new Wes-Del record.

"We use (the jump serve) quite a bit," said Warrior coach Chuck Wallen, noting that he has two other jump-servers on his squad. "All the girls do a really good job and they all can do that in different games. ... It's nice to have a 6-footer doing it. She can jump up and shoot it down at you."

The service run by Scroggins, who also had five kills, keyed the win for Wes-Del in game two, which ended when seniors Kay'Leigh Watson and Nikki Craig combined for a stuff block on Sarah Westgerdes.

The Warriors controlled the other two games as well, scoring the first three points of the opener thanks to Jay County errors and then using a 6-0 run to pull ahead 15-4. They closed the match on a 5-0 run, getting back-to-back kills from Lauren Jones to end the evening.

Craig and Watson shared the team high of 10 kills for Wes-Del. Sacha Gill had 12 digs, and Kasi Townsend put up 33 assists.

Gill and Jones each totaled five kills, and Craig finished with 10 digs.

"They played us tough at Noblesville," said Wallen, whose team topped the Patriots 25-20, 25-13 at the Sept. 8 tournament. "The first game we played them, they pushed us hard. ... We wanted to push hard with our serve, and we did, and then we got into our offense off of their free balls.

"We had a lot of respect for them. We really brought our A game."

Wallen also complimented the Patriot team and fans for efforts in organizing the cancer benefit match.

"This was a great atmosphere for any volleyball match," he said. "That's a tremendous amount of money they raised. All the Jay County fans are to be commended for supporting it like that."

Jay County played its best volleyball early in the third game. After falling behind 6-2 on a kill by Craig, the Patriots fought back to get within a point at 9-8. However, Wes-Del responded with an 8-2 run to pull away.

The home team was hurt all night by service errors, including three in just nine possessions in the opening game.

"And in the third game when we were playing well we came back out and we missed a serve and gave it right back to them," said Medler. "We just gave up way too many points to a team that's way too good ...

"We had no consistency at all. Part of it was we were cranked at the beginning, playing out of control, and couldn't get them settled back down right away. We settled down finally at the beginning of the third game and we played well for a stretch, but then we let them ace us and got to worrying about it again."

Westgerdes and Kelsey Wood each had three kills in the defeat. The Patriots finished with just 11 service points, three of which came from Ashley Langenkamp.

Despite the defeat, Medler said he was thrilled with the reaction from his girls after the decision to hold the cancer benefit match.

"They just took hold of it from that point on," he said. "They did just a super nice job of responding well to this. People did a great job supporting it. It was a lot of fun."

Junior varsity

Jay County dropped to 10-3 on the season with a two-game loss to the Warriors.

Laura Castillo posted team highs of nine points and eight digs for the Patriots, and Liz Walker had seven points and 13 assists.

Amy Alig totaled seven kills and a block, Taylor Burris and Ashley Franklin had three kills apiece and Ashley Langenkamp finished with five digs.[[In-content Ad]]
