Local roundup
GENEVA - They are glad to have Mitch Waters back.
The Jay County High School graduate pitched the Portland Rockets to just their second win of the year Thursday night by a 6-4 score over the Geneva Cardinals.
Waters, in his second outing after a stint in professional baseball with the Independent League's Kalamazoo Kings, allowed just one run in seven innings to earn the win for Portland (2-10). He struck out six batters and gave up just three hits.
Dustin McHenry recorded the final two outs for the save.
Joe Mack racked up four hits for the Rockets, who tallied single runs in the first and second innings and never trailed. Heath Williams (JCHS), Ryan Shell, Ryan Schmidt and Corey Waldrath added two hits apiece.
Because of a schedule change, Portland will play a double-header at home Saturday against Warsaw at 1 p.m.
Hensley, Carvel win
Community and Family Services held its 2007 Hoopfest recently with duos from Portland winning all three youth divisions.
Bryce Hensley and Kyler Carvel finished as the champions in the 10-and-younger competition. Brock McFarland and Cade Price were first in the 10-13-year-old division, and Taylor Farmer and William Mayfield won the 14-16-year-old division.
Adult winners were the teams of Dustin Overton and Tyler Rigby, Portland, and Spencer Hummer and Casey Waters of Dunkirk and Redkey respectively.[[In-content Ad]]
