NEW CASTLE — Two local children took first in the Elks District Hoop Shoot Contest on Sunday at the New Castle Fieldhouse.
Olivia Waters and Carter Link won the 8-9-year-old age group to advance to the state level.
Link made 21-of-25 shots and Waters made 15-of-25 to earn the victories. The duo move on to the Elks State Hoop Shoot Contest Feb. 22 at New Castle.
This is the first time Portland has had two winners from the same age group advance to the state level.
Nathan Klatt, who placed seventh in the nation more than two decades ago, made all 25 shots at the state level to earn the highest finish of area competitors.

Kahlig leads Tribe
FORT RECOVERY — Faith Kahlig scored 16 points to lead the Indians as the Fort Recovery Middle School seventh grade girls basketball team lost Tuesday to Coldwater, 28-20.
The Tribe eighth grade girls team won 27-26.
Elise Gehle and Hanna Knapke each scored two points in support of Kahlig.
Grace Thien led the FRMS eighth graders with eight points. Sydney Dues and Claire Metzger both chipped in five points.

Braun powers Indians
CELINA, Ohio — Ryan Braun led the Fort Recovery eighth grade boys basketball team to a 31-30 victory Tuesday over Celina.
The Tribe seventh graders fell to Celina 33-18.
Braun scored 13 points in the eighth grade Tribe’s win over the Bulldogs.
Derek Siefring tallied seven points in the loss for the Fort Recovery seventh graders.

EJMS 2-1 at invite
DECATUR — The East Jay Middle School wrestling team went 2-1 Saturday at the Bellmont Quad.
The Chiefs picked up wins over Muncie Wilson (58-25) and Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian (63-15) before after falling to host Bellmont, 44-42.
Mason Winner went a perfect 3-0 in the 110-pound weight class. Hunter Mills (90) and Gaven Hare (175) both went 2-0 for the tournament and Dan Ostrowski (160) won his only match.
Caleb Chenoweth (102) and Mitchel Frasher (132) both posted 2-1 records.
In exhibition action, Kaimen Sanders, Bryan Newman, Taylor Klarer and Cole Brotherton all went undefeated.[[In-content Ad]]
