Waugh leads SA, Jay takes 6th

OSSIAN - Erika Waugh placed second in a couple of events Saturday as the South Adams High School girls swim team took fifth at the Norwell Invitational.

Jay County scored 118 points to finish sixth behind the Starfires (125) while the host Knights won the nine-team meet with 258.

Waugh, the sectional champion in the 500-yard freestyle last season, finished second in the event at Norwell in 5 minutes, 39.74 seconds. She was also the 100 backstroke runner-up in 1:04.1.

Mary Hudson had the top finish for Jay County as she took second place with a time of 1:13.86 in the 100 breaststroke. She added a fourth-place effort in the 100 butterfly in 1:07.96.

Allison Beitler was third in the 200 freestyle in 2:15.76 for South Adams.

Eme Miller, Michelle Landfair and Elaine Hemmelgarn, who joined Hudson to take fourth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:51.68, also added top five individual finishes for the Patriots.

Miller was fourth in the 200 individual medley at 2:32.65.

Landfair was fifth in the 200 freestyle in 2:20.79, and Hemmelgarn posted a career-best time of 1:18.18 for fifth in the 100 breaststroke.

Stars fall to 0-2

BERNE - The South Adams High School girls basketball team fell behind by 26 at halftime on the way to a 63-29 loss to the visiting Blackford Bruins.

The Starfires (0-2) gave up 18 points to Blackford (2-0) in each of the first three quarters and were outscored 36-6 in the second and third combined.

Jaci Liechty was the lone SAHS player in double figures with 12 points. Tori Smith and Karen Bollenbacher added seven apiece.

Alyssa Armenta and Lyndsey Chandler each scored two points in the Starfire junior varsity team's 48-6 loss to Blackford.

Bader wins nine

NOBLESVILLE - Alex Bader earned nine victories this weekend to lead the Jay County Winter Swim Team at the Noblesville Ice Breaker.

Bader took high-point honors in the 9-10-year-old girls division. She won nine out of her 10 events, and in her lone runner-up effort she finished behind teammate Carley Stone in the 50-yard backstroke.

James Keen picked up eight top-three finishes, including wins in the 11-12-year-old boys 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle. Eliza Bader was first in the 8-and-younger girls 50 breaststroke, Caitlin Mark took the top spot in the 13-14-year-old girls 100 breaststroke and Anne Vormohr won the 11-12-year-old girls 50 backstroke.

Other top-three efforts for Jay County came from Parker Collingsworth, Amy Schwartz and Katy Smeltzer.[[In-content Ad]]
