Weaver graduates cum laude (7/13/04)

Taking Note

Martha E. Weaver, daughter of Rob and Mindy Weaver, Portland, graduated from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, in a May 15 ceremony.

She graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in economics.

While a senior at Wittenberg, Weaver had been tapped for membership in Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.

She was a member of the varsity cross country and swimming teams, Residence Hall Association, Just Eve vocal ensemble, Omicron Delta Kappa and Mortar Board, senior honor societies for scholarship, leadership and service.

She also was in the honors program, Pick and Pen, junior service honor society, Tau Pi Phi, national business administration and economics fraternity, Chi Alpha Sigma, national college athletic honor society, Student Senate and Kappa Delta sorority.

LIBRARY NEWS

The summer reading program at the Jay County Public Library will end on Saturday, July 17.

Books must be logged in by 5 p.m. for children in the “Get Hooked on Reading” program and teens in the “Make Waves with Books” program. No exceptions will be made.

Children who complete the program will be invited to a pool party on Saturday, July 24, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Portland Pool. An awards program and snacks will follow in the park.

Teens completing the program will be invited to a luau at the pool on Friday, July 23, at 5:30 p.m. Awards will be handed out and refreshments will be served.

HONOR SOCIETY

Two former Jay County High School students were recently inducted into the Tri State University Chapter of Phi Eta Sigma National Freshman Honor Society.

The inductees are Travis Richards, son of Jerry and Donna Richards and Matthew Minnich, son of Dale and Theresa Minnich.

DEAN’S LIST

Two Jay County students have been named to the dean’s list at Anderson University for the spring semester.

Those honored include Brittany Rae Pinkerton, Bryant, and Lauren Nicole McKee, Portland.

To be named to the dean’s list, a student must have a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0.

Megan C. Johnston, Portland, has been named to the Ohio Northern University dean’s list for the spring quarter. She is a senior, majoring in accounting.

HOST FAMILY

The Tom and Jill Hull family, Fort Recovery, will welcome Stefanie Schuessler from Germany into their home for the 2004 academic year.

As part of the Youth For Understanding exchange program, Schuessler will learn about U.S. culture while living with the Hull family and attending Fort Recovery High School.

STUDENT COUNCIL TRIP

Austin Flynn and Scott Walker, sophomores at Jay County High School, attended the 68th Annual National Association of Student Councils at Silverado High School in Las Vegas, Nev. from June 26 to June 30.

The boys were trained in basic and advanced leadership, communication skills, and dealing with diversity.

They also participated in two community service projects, including reading books to elementary school children as part of Readers Become Leaders, and collecting money for Kids Can Free the Children Foundation, which strives to improve education in an impoverished country.

Before the conference began, Flynn and Walker, along with 80 other Indiana high school students, canoed on the Colorado River, took a train to the Grand Canyon and visited the Ancient Pueblo at the Wupatki National Monument.

Austin is the treasurer of the Jay County High School Student Council. He is the son of Steve and Carlotta Flynn, Redkey. Scott is the sergeant at arms of the student council. He is the son of Patty Walker and the late James Walker.

The boys want to thank local organizations and the Jay County High School Student Council for helping fund this trip.[[In-content Ad]]
