Weaver named to honor group

Taking Note

Martha Weaver, a Wittenberg University senior, has been tapped for membership in Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Weaver is an economics major and a member of the varsity cross country and swimming teams, Residence Hall Association, Just Eve vocal ensemble, Omicron Delta Kappa and Mortar Board, senior honor societies for scholarship, leadership and service, honors program, Pick and Pen, junior service honor society, Tau Pi Phi, national business administration and economics fraternity, Chi Alpha Sigma, national college athletic honor society, Student Senate and Kappa Delta sorority.

She is a 2000 graduate of Jay County High School and the daughter of Robert and Martha Weaver, Portland.

YOUNG LEADER

Andrew Flueckiger, son of Russ and Susan Flueckiger, Geneva, has been selected to take part in the 2004 Global Young Leaders Conference.

The conference, set for June 27 to July 8, in Washington, D.C., and New York City, will bring together 350 outstanding young scholars from around the world.

A junior at South Adams High School this fall, Flueckiger has parti-cipated in concert band, FFa, basketball, football, wrestling, and baseball. He has worked as a lifeguard at Pine Lake, west of Berne.

The theme of GYLC is “The Leaders of Tomorrow Preparing for the Global Challenges and Responsibilities of the Future.” Participants will meet with key leaders and newsmakers in the fields of politics, finance, culture, and diplomacy. It culminates with a Global Summit, in which students apply what they’ve learned as they debate, negotiate, and build coaltions while dealing with a variety of world issues. Past highlights have included a briefing at the State Department and site visits to financial institutions on Wall Street.

The event is coordinated by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, a non-profit, non-partisan education organization founded in 1985.

HONOR SOCIETY

Two former Jay County High School students were recently inducted into the Tri State University Chapter of Phi Eta Sigma National Freshman Honor Society.

The inductees are Travis Richards, son of Jerry and Donna Richards and Matthew Minnich, son of Dale and Theresa Minnich.

ON DEAN’S LIST

Two Jay County students have been named to the dean’s list at Anderson University for the spring semester. Those honored include Brittany Rae Pinkerton, Bryant, and Lauren Nicole McKee, Portland.

To be named to the dean’s list, a student must have a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0.

Megan C. Johnston, Portland, has been named to the Ohio Northern University dean’s list for the spring quarter. She is a senior, majoring in accounting.

MEMORY MATTERS

Judy Rust of the Caregiver program of Lifestream Services will present a program called “Memory Matters” at 11:15 a.m. (Indiana time) on Thursday, June 10, at the Union City Senior Cafe.

She will focus on memory problems and factors that can affect memory impairment.

Seniors of 60 or older may have lunch at the center for a suggested donation of $3. Those under 60 may have lunch for $5.75 per person. Reservations are necessary and may be made by calling (937) 964-4721.[[In-content Ad]]
