Weaver picks up first collegiate victory (11/26/03)
Collegiate check-up
Kyle Weaver scored his first win for the Wabash College men’s swim team, helping to lead the Little Giants to defeat Wittenberg 135.5-107.5 Nov. 14.
Weaver, a 2003 Jay County graduate, teamed with Brandon Peacock for a one-two finish in the 50-yard freestyle. He earned his first victory in the event, reaching the wall in 22.82.
He was also fifth in the 100-yard backstroke at the meet in 1:00.74.
Two other Patriots also competed for Wabash in the meet.
Caleb Dann was seventh in the 200-yard individual medley, and swam on the third-place 200-yard freestyle relay team. Andrew Wells was seventh in the 500-yard freestyle.
The trio also helped the Little Giants to a fourth-place finish as they hosted the Wabash Invitational.
Weaver had the best individuals finishes at that event, taking 16th in the 100-yard butterfly and 13th in the 100-yard backstroke. He was also a member of the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay team.
Heitkamp huge in win
Sara Heitkamp, a 2002 Fort Recovery graduate, struggled in an opening loss, but rebounded to lead the Capital University women’s basketball team to a 69-54 victory over Carnegie Mellon last weekend.
After scoring just six points in a loss to Bethany a night earlier, Heitkamp tossed in a game-high 16 points in the win over Mellon. The top returning scorer also had six steals, four assists and three rebounds.
She had nine steals, six boards and three assists against Bethany.
Boyles scoring big
South Adams graduate Brad Boyles has scored in double figures in each of his first two games this season for the Bluffton College men’s basketball team.
Boyles opened the year with a 14-point effort in a 76-75 Beaver victory over Alma. He also had five rebounds and two assists in the victory.
He upped his scoring a big in the second game, but Bluffton still took a 61-58 loss to Capital. He finished with 19 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Hummel honored again
Rose-Hulman freshman quarterback Cameron Hummel, a 2003 Jay County graduate, couldn’t quite lift his team to its first winning season in nearly a decade. But he did pick up another Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference award.
Hummel, who finished fourth in the conference in total offense, earned All-SCAC honorable mention. He was also among the conference leaders in scoring and passing efficiency.
He finished the season in a 21-19 loss to Centre in which he went 8-of-26 passing for 129 yards. He also carried the ball 15 times for 22 yards.
Despite the defeat the Engineers finished at 5-5, the team’s best effort since 1995. Rose-Hulman also had its best result in its five-year affiliation with the SCAC, finishing 3-3.
Steiner finishes third
Scott Steiner, a senior linebacker from South Adams, picked up eight tackles his final game of the season with the Bluffton College football team. He had eight tackles in a 37-19 loss to Defiance.
Steiner finished the season with 65 tackles, good for third on the team. He had a team-best nine tackles for a loss, one sack and five pass break-ups.
Fort Recovery graduate Nathan Kreider, a lineman, also plays for the Beavers.
SA grad honored at Taylor
Cory Neuenschwander was one of five Taylor University football players to be honored as a selection to the Mid-States Football Association All-Mideast squad.
Neuenschwander, a senior from South Adams, was chosen as a second team receiver. He caught 43 passes for 560 yards and four touchdowns this season, and his 4.3 catches per game ranked fourth in the MSFA.
In his most recent contest, a 13-9 Trojan season-ending win over Malone, Neuenschwander had three catches for 16 yards.

Julie Harsha, 2002 South Adams graduate, was named this year’s most improved player on the Bluffton College tennis team.
She scored her biggest victory of the year for the Beavers in a 5-3 win over Sinclair Community College, topping Kelly Skinner 6-0, 6-0. She also teamed with Jenni Blose to pull off a 9-8 (7-3) win in doubles action.
Jay County graduate Paul Fulkerson got a couple of carries as the Tri-State University football team closed a tough 0-10 season with a 42-14 loss to Alma Nov. 15. He finished with two carries for seven yards in the defeat.
Steph Welch, a sophomore at Bluffton College, finished her season with the cross country team this month. She placed 52nd at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference meet with a time of 27:41 on the 6K course.
The South Adams graduate was also 50th at the Manchester Invitational this season and 46th at the Wilmington Invitational.[[In-content Ad]]
