Ivy Tech will be offering a class in Web page design with Microsoft Front Page in October.

The four-session course has a tuition charge of $99. It will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning Oct. 16 and concluding Nov. 6.

Classes will meet at John Jay Center for Learning in downtown Portland.

This is an introductory course covering such topics as creating tables, pictures, animation and more.

Focusing on education

Collaboration and/or consolidation of education in Randolph County is on the agenda, thanks to a $50,000 grant from the state of Indiana.

With assistance from the Randolph Economic Development Corporation, the five Randolph County school districts will be involved in a public meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17. The meeting will be at the Beeson Clubhouse, Winchester.

All five school boards will be on hand, and the public is invited. Current cooperation and collaboration among the school systems will be discussed, as well as additional steps that might be taken.

Brian Reid of the Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning at the University of Indianapolis will lead the discussion and make a presentation on what today's students need to know to survive in the global economy.

The discussion will continue with nationally-known speaker Ray McNulty of the International Center for Leadership in Education speaking on future trends and challenges. McNulty's speech will be in the auditorium of Winchester Community High School at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Both programs are products of the Randolph County Good to Great education group.

Healthy Kids Day

Mercer Health and the Coldwater and Celina, Ohio Kiwanis are teaming up today to conduct Healthy Kids Day from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Coldwater High School Auditeria, 310 N. Second St.

At the free event hearing, language assessment, dental, visual and other health-related screenings for children will be available. There will also be height and weight checks, body mass index readings and skin cancer assessments of the face.

Coldwater Police also will be fingerprinting children and offering DNA sampling kits.

FCC chief to retire

The chief operating officer of an automotive parts company, which has plants in Portland and Berne, plans to retire.

Hitoshi Yamabe, who works at FCC (Indiana) Inc., recently announced that he will retire after working six years at the Portland plant and four years at the Berne plant.

Yamabe joined the company in 1993 after working for Honda Corporation for 28 years and serving as manager of two plants in Japan. The Portland FCC plant tripled in size while Yamabe worked there. FCC makes clutches for Ford Motor Company.

After his retirement, Yamabe plans to move to Tokyo, Japan.

Shop for cause

Jay Randolph Developmental Services is participating in a fundraising event sponsored by Macy's. The "Shop for a Cause" benefit will take place on Oct. 13 at Macy's locations, including the Muncie Mall store.

Customers will be able to purchase a discount card for $5 with the proceeds going to JRDS.

Tickets may also be purchased from 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at the Portland Center, 901 E. Water St., Portland, or the Winchester Center, 904 E. Base Road, Winchester. They remain on sale through Oct. 10.

Energy seminar set

Jay County REMC is hoping to help its customers make their homes more energy efficient.

The company will hold a Home Energy Seminar Oct. 18 at Jay County REMC, 484 South 200 West, Portland. Registration for the free event and a light meal start at 5:30 p.m. The program starts at 6 p.m.

Kara Baker of the Wabash Valley Power Association will demonstrate how to calculate what an average bill should be based on heating and cooling equipment, insulation and other variables.

Also, Scott DeHoff of DeHoff Insulation will discuss how to make a home more energy efficient with insulation, and Dan Schuff of Habegger Distributors will talk about the evolution of heat pumps.
