Capsule Reports
Land sold
The South Adams School Board accepted a bid of nearly $750,000 for a former elementary school site at U.S. 27 and Ind. 218.
The sole bid submitted by CDI Development Service LLC. was for $747,300, but included a requirement that the board pay closing costs of $42,300, making the total $705,000.
That amount is still above the appraised value of $693,000.
CDI also plans to ask that local government approve development plans that may include a grocery operation and Amish store and possibly an Amish-style restaurant. Up to five retail locations could be developed at the site.
Parks tour
The Fort Recovery Park Board will tour the village’s parks at 6 p.m. Monday prior to the board’s meeting at 7 p.m.
Three injured
Three people were injured in a rear-end collision in Bearcreek Township Friday afternoon.
Tonya R. Miller, 34, 102 E. Elm St., Bryant, was traveling north on U.S. 27 when she stopped to make a left turn onto county road 500 South. Miller’s car was struck in the rear by a vehicle being driven by Shari T. Hershey, 47, 215 Chestnut St., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
Miller suffered an injury to her lower arm, Hershey complained of chest pain and a passenger in Hershey’s vehicle, Julia A. Hershey, same address as driver, suffered severe bleeding to her face. Julia Hershey was treated by Jay Emergency Medical Service following the accident.
Damage of $10,000 to $25,000 was caused to Miller’s 1997 Chrysler Sebring and Hershey’s 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser, registered to Danny J. Lemen, 204 N. Talamore Ave., Yorktown.
The accident occurred at 1:50 p.m.
Injured
A rural Portland teenager was injured after his vehicle rolled Friday evening.
Jared A. Alig, 16, 256 N. 600 East, was driving west on county road 400 North when he crested a hill at 550 East. Alig lost control of his car, striking the ditch on the north side of the road. The vehicle rolled once, coming to rest on its top.
Alig suffered a head injury and was transferred to Jay County Hospital.
Damage of $2,500 to $5,000 was caused to the 1999 Mercury Cougar registered to Paul D. Alig, same address as driver.
The accident occurred at 11:23 p.m.
Rolled, injured
A rural Portland teenager was injured early Sunday morning after her vehicle rolled several times south of Bryant.
Morgan J. Smitley, 17, 3298 South U.S. 27, Portland, was driving south on U.S. 27 when she exited the west side of the road at the intersection with Bryant Pike. Her car hit a drainage pipe, rolled several times, crossing U.S. 27 and coming to rest in a ditch.
Smitley suffered incapacitating injuries and was treated by Jay Emergency Medical Service just after 6 a.m.
Police believe the accident occurred earlier in the morning, but Smitley’s vehicle was not easily visible in the ditch.
Damage of $5,000 to $10,000 was caused to her 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier, registered to Peggy and Roger Smitley, 407 E. Main St., Bryant.
Mailbox damaged
A Portland man reported that his mailbox was damaged.
Randy Williams, 809 Chicago Ave., told police that someone tore the door off of his mailbox sometime before 6 a.m. Monday.
Taillight damaged
A Portland man told police that someone cracked a taillight on his car.
Donald Dingus, 600 S. Meridian St., told police the light was damaged sometime between 10:30 p.m. Saturday and 4:10 p.m. Sunday. He reported the incident at 4:14 p.m. Sunday.
Car entered
A Portland woman reported that she saw a man enter her vehicle early Saturday morning.
Chelsea Rickner, 1106 S. Meridian St., told police that a man wearing a brown jacket entered her car. She reported the incident at 1:29 a.m.
Purse stolen
A Geneva woman reported that someone stole her purse while her vehicle was parked in Portland.
Amy Bergman, Geneva, told police that her purse was stolen sometime between 9:35 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday.
Debit used
A Portland woman reported that someone took her debit card and has been using it to make purchases.
Alexis Castillo, 548 N. Charles St., reported the incident Monday. The case is under investigation.
Hits deer
An SUV driven by a Portland man hit a deer Friday evening on U.S. 27 between Berne and Geneva.
Roger A. Journay, 45, was driving north at 8:51 p.m. when he was unable to avoid a deer that ran onto the road.
The accident caused an estimated $2,500 to $5,000 in damage to his vehicle.
SUV damaged
A vehicle registered to a Portland woman was damaged sometime before Tuesday morning.
Portland police received a report that a 2000 Oldsmobile Bravada registered to Teresa Hart, 685 S. Western Ave., was damaged while it was parked at her residence in the Piedmont Apartment complex.
Less than $1,000 of damage was caused to the vehicle. The damage occurred sometime between 9 p.m. Monday and 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Rail hit
An Indianapolis man told police he may have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing his car to exit the road and strike a guard rail in Richland Township Tuesday.
Harold D. Skinner Jr., 34, 4228 S. Glen Arm Road, was traveling north on Ind. 67 just south of county road 700 South when his 1999 Dodge Intrepid exited the east side of the road, striking the edge of a guardrail, continuing to travel north, striking the rail again before sliding into the ditch.
Damage of $5,000 to $10,000 was caused in the 5:41 a.m. accident.
Deer accident
A rural Portland woman hit a deer with her SUV in Wayne Township Monday.
Dawn M. Kunkler, 39, 4316 E. 400 South, Portland, was traveling north on Boundary Pike at county road 300 South when she struck a deer on the roadway with her 2003 Pontiac Montana.
