Arrested
A Portland man was arrested Tuesday by Jay County police on a charge of class D felony theft.
A Jay Superior Court warrant was issued on Aug. 15 for the arrest of Eric A. Shultz, 20, 622 E. Water St.
He is accused of stealing from the Corner Cafe on July 7 while he was an employee at the Portland restaurant.
Shultz was released later Tuesday on his own recognizance following an initial hearing.
Lucky fliers
Two men were able to walk away after their small plane crashed in a cornfield while practicing takeoffs and landings at a northeastern Indiana airport, The Associated Press reported.
The pilot, Jason Ross of Fort Wayne, suffered a minor hand injury in the crash Tuesday. His passenger, Steve Kortokrax of Roanoke, was not injured.
Ross was flying near the small airport in Tocsin, about 15 miles south of Fort Wayne, when the plane clipped some corn stalks and crashed in the field, Indiana State Police Trooper Kurt Jack said.
The plane’s fuel tank ruptured and caught fire after the crash, but the fire was out by the time firefighters arrived at the scene. Ross is a pilot for Southwest Airlines and normally flies Boeings 737s, Jack said.
The hot, humid weather contributed to the crash by causing the airplane to have less lift than normal, he said. “He just got out there and on his turn he lost lift,” Jack told the News-Banner of Bluffton. “He tried to counteract and go right with it. He just didn’t have enough and it dropped like a rock.”
Deaths
Tommy D. Phillips, 79, Dunkirk.
Agnes E. Smock, 84, Ridgeville.
Velma I. Reef, 79, rural Berne, mother of a Bryant resident.
Kathy Stafford Tankersley, 54, Williamsburg Apartments, Pennville.
