Jay County Habitat for Humanity is currently accepting applications for the house that will be built in either Dunkirk or Portland next year. Forms can be picked up in any local bank.

Applications must be completed and returned by Monday, Dec. 22, to Trinity United Methodist Church, 323 S. Meridian St., Portland.

Elected

The Jay County Fair Association elected five members for a three-year term at its annual meeting on Dec. 13. The members elected were Trent Paxson, Rob Weaver, Ralph Grapner, Donald Gillespie and Gary Daniels.

Following its annual meeting, the board gathered for a re-orginizational session and elected the following officers: Donald Gillespie, president; Tom Zimmerman, vice president; Gary Trobridge, treasurer; and Trent Paxson, secretary.

Increased

Portland and Jay County police will increase enforcement during the upcoming holiday season targeting impaired drivers.

Between Dec. 19 and Jan. 4, police will intensify their search for impaired drivers, supporting the national “You Drink & Drive. You Lose.” mobilization.

The Governor’s Council on Impaired & Dangerous Driving, a division of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, is providing these departments with funds to increase enforcement efforts.

Arrested

A New Philadelphia, Ohio man was arrested Tuesday for burglary and theft, both felony offenses.

A Jay Circuit Court warrant was issued Nov. 17 for the arrest of Eric K. Bennington, 19, 827 Caderly St. He was arrested for burglary, a class B felony, and theft, a class D felony.

He is accused of breaking into a Pennville residence in August and stealing guns.

As of this morning, Bennington was being held in the Jay County Jail on $30,000 bond.

Tamara Paxson-Hooker, 56, Indianapolis, a native of Portland.

Lois L. Bailey, 89, Chalet Village, Berne, a native of Jay County.

Weather

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, and there is a 30 percent chance of flurries then a chance of light snow showers after midnight. Lows will be in the lower 20s. Thursday will bring mostly cloudy skies with a 40 percent chance of light snow showers. Highs in the lower 30s are expected.

There was just a trace of snow overnight, and the temperature at 7 a.m. today was 25, the Portland weather observation station reported. Tuesday’s high was 46, and the low was 25.

Friday’s forecast from the National Weather Service calls for partly cloudy skies and highs in the lower 30s.

Saturday will be mostly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of light snow showers and highs in the upper 30s.

On Sunday, look for partly cloudy skies and highs in the mid 30s.
