Icy accidents
Local police investigated three separate accidents this morning that occurred on icy pavement.
The first accident occurred at 5:35 a.m. in Wayne Township.
Christopher T. Burt, 31, 12300 North 200 East, Eaton, told Jay County police he was driving north on U.S. 27, just south of county road 400 North. As he went around a curve, he lost control of his 2002 Ford F-150 on the ice. The truck went off the east side of the road and into a ditch.
The accident caused damage estimated at $1,000 to $2,500.
A vehicle driven by a Portland woman slid off the street and struck a fire hydrant in the city this morning.
Sherri McKibben, 48, 801 E. Walnut St., told Portland police she was driving east on Votaw Street, near Wayne Street. As she braked, her 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser slid on the ice. The vehicle slid off the street and struck a fire hydrant.
The 5:58 a.m. accident caused combined damage to the Chrysler and the fire hydrant, owned by the city of Portland, 321 N. Meridian St., that was estimated at $2,500 to $5,000.

Vehicles driven by a rural Ridgeville man and a Hartford City man collided at the entrance to Coca-Cola Bottling Company, 1617 N. Meridian St., Portland, today.
Paul B. Flick, 43, 7092 North 800 West, Ridgeville, told Portland police he was driving on Meridian Street and began to turn into the parking lot. As he turned, his 1998 Jeep Cherokee slid on the ice and struck a 1989 Chevrolet 1500 driven by Delbert C. Hughes Jr., 52, 625 W. Fulton St. Hughes was stopped and waiting to turn onto Meridian Street.
The 6:14 a.m. accident caused combined damage to the vehicles that was estimated at $1,000 to $2,500.

Elbow injury
A rural Bryant man suffered minor elbow bleeding Tuesday as the result of a three-vehicle accident in Wayne Township.
Robert F. Schmit, 71, 5167 East Ind. 67, was injured in the 5:22 p.m. accident. Schmit told Jay County police he was driving north on Ind. 67, near Ind. 26. As he approached a curve, he fell asleep. His 1996 Buick LeSabre crossed the centerline and struck a 2005 Chevrolet 1500 driven by Nick C. Inglis, 44, 2484 East 1400 North, Summitville, and a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Joshua M. Beaty, 19, 9848 West 600 South, Redkey.
Police estimated combined damage to the vehicles at $10,000 to $25,000.[[In-content Ad]]
