DELAYED
The curbside pick-up of recyclable materials in Portland for today has been delayed due to illness, Portland Street Department superintendent Jeff Harker said this morning.
Recycling materials normally picked up today will be instead picked up on Thursday, along with the normal Thursday route, Harker said.
ACCIDENTS
Several people suffered injuries in a number of accidents that occurred on Monday and Tuesday due to ice on the roads.
On Monday at 6 p.m. at a curve on U.S. 27 between county roads 100 and 200 North, Jerry V. Duncan, 35, 745 N. Union St., Union City, and Joel T. Smitley, 26, 120 1/2 N. Commerce St., Portland, received injuries as a result of a collision.
Duncan complained of pain to his head, and Smitley complained of pain to his neck. Both refused treatment at the scene.
Duncan told police he was southbound on U.S. 27 behind Smitley’s vehicle. Duncan told Jay County police Smitley’s vehicle had no lights on, but then they came on and off twice. Duncan said he realized then that Smitley was going to turn left so he applied his brakes and consequently lost control of his vehicle.
His car crossed the center line and collided with Smitley’s car as it was turning into a driveway at the Budget Inn Motel, 1411 North U.S. 27.
According to Smitley, he had his lights and left turn signal on. Police found that Smitley’s rear lights and turn signal were not working.
Estimated damage to Duncan’s 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis and Smitley’s 1986 Chevrolet Caprice was between $5,000 and $10,000. Smitley’s vehicle was towed from the scene.
A Bluffton man was transported by Jay Emergency Medical Service following a 3:40 p.m. accident on U.S. 27, near county road 300 North.
Ali A. Al-Hamdany, 51 W. Ohio St., told Jay County police he was traveling north on U.S. 27, when he lost control of his vehicle and it crossed the center line and traveled into the path of a southbound vehicle driven by Megan I. Bailey, 23, 1327 East 500 North, Portland.
Bailey told police she couldn’t avoid the collision. Both vehicles were towed from the scene and sustained estimated damage between $5,000 and $10,000.
The Portland Fire Department also was called to the scene at 3:48 p.m., arriving at 3:53 p.m. Eight firefighters with two trucks responded.
Al-Hamdany was driving a 1989 Buick Century registered to Vera McElfresh, same address as driver, and Bailey was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Concorde.
Also on Tuesday at 9:55 p.m., a Portland man was transported by JEMS following a one-vehicle accident on county road 400 North, near county road 550 West, in Jackson Township.
Jeffery R. McIntire, 44, 6961 West 400 South, complained of pain to his back following the accident. He told police he was eastbound on county road 400 North, when he lost control of his car, which slid off the north side of the road, struck a utility pole owned by American Electric Power, crossed the road again and came to rest in the south ditch.
A report by Jay County police said that alcohol appeared to be a factor in the accident.
The 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier, registered to Dana McIntire, 424 1/2 W. Arch St., Portland, was towed from the scene. Damage was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
