Capsule Reports

Correction
In Tuesday’s edition of The CR in the story “Sewer projects await USDA green light,” information about an attorney for the City of Portland was incorrect.
Attorney James Forcum, Hartford City, has not been hired by the city to negotiate a sewage treatment contract with the Jay County Regional Sewer District.
Portland Mayor Bruce Hosier said this morning that city officials are still reviewing a draft treatment contract and that hiring of a special attorney would need to be approved by the Portland Board of Works. Portland’s regular attorney, Bill Hinkle, is a resident of the Foxfire Drive area, which will be affected by the sewer project in negotiation.

Entrance closed
The main entrance to the Jay County Jail will be closed briefly, beginning Friday at 7 a.m.
Jail visitors can enter at the door next to the garage (Sally Port) on the east side of the building. Signs will be posted.
The main entrance will reopen Saturday at 7 a.m.

Abrupt accident

Two vehicles wrecked in Jackson Township Tuesday morning after a vehicle in front of them stopped abruptly.
Two vehicles driven by Terry L. Robbins Jr., 35, 6080 West 400 North, Pennville, and Scott E. Benter, 34, 6925 West 725 North, were traveling east on county road 400 North about a half mile west of U.S. 27. A vehicle in front of Robbins’ vehicle stopped abruptly, causing Robbins to exit the roadway to avoid a collision. Benter was also unable to stop in time and hit Robbins. The unknown vehicle drove off following the accident.
Robbins suffered minor facial injuries and both drivers were attended to by Jay Emergency Medical Service at the scene.
An estimated $5,000 to $10,000 of damage was caused to Robbin’s 2000 Pontiac Grand Am and to Benter’s 2002 GMC Yukon in the 7:41 a.m. accident.

Sign stolen
A sign was stolen from the Bryant Speedway south of the town sometime this weekend.
Randy Brotherton, 5538 North U.S. 27, Portland, told Jay County police that he put a 4-foot by 6-foot sign with the words “Bryant Speedway” at the location on county road 600 North about a mile east of U.S. 27. Brotherton last saw the sign Saturday and said it was gone when he returned around 7 a.m. Sunday.

Vehicle damaged
A Berne man told police someone damaged his vehicle while it was parked at the Portland Pool recently.
Roscoe Wulliman, 1217 W. Water St., said the front fender, front door and rear door on his 2008 Buick LaCrosse was scratched between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
He reported the vandalism to Portland police Monday.[[In-content Ad]]
