Correction
The age of a Dunkirk woman in Tuesday’s felony arrest was incorrect. Summer S. Stanton is 31.
Minor damage
A detached garage at a Portland home sustained minor damage after a compost pile outside of it spontaneously combusted.
Portland firefighters responded the small fire at 404 W. Walnut St., owned by Kirk Daniels, at 4:14 p.m. Tuesday. Two trucks and seven firefighters responded and the fire was put out by 4:23 p.m.
Firefighters began returning to the station by 4:28 p.m.
Meeting canceled
The Fort Recovery Village Council scheduled for July 2 is canceled due to the Fourth of July holiday.
Energy programs
Community and Family Services has funding available for its weatherization program, which promotes energy efficiency through home improvement. Contact CFS at (260) 726-9318 for more information.
CFS is also offering energy education classes for anyone who has signed up for the Energy Assistance Program. Anyone who received a letter about the classes should contact the office at (260) 726-9318 to set an appointment.
Open house
Jay County Purdue Cooperative Extension will have an open house Wednesday for the public to meet the new staff.
The open house will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the office, 126 N. Meridian St., Portland.
Extension filled two vacancies in the office this spring by hiring Larry Temple, educator, and Molly Hunt, health and human services educator.
Mirrors damaged
The mirrors on a Portland woman’s scooter were damaged while it was parked outside Pit’s Cocktail Lounge Tuesday evening.
Joyce Butler, 600 S. Meridian St., told Portland police that she parked her scooter outside Pit’s, 214 N. Meridian St., around 6 p.m. She was informed of the damage to her scooter around 10:30 p.m. and reported it to police at 10:45 p.m.
Items stolen
A Portland man reported that someone stole items from his home sometime before Tuesday evening.
Jerry Irelan, 112 W. Second St., told police that about $75 in change, two boxes of .22 caliber ammunition, a .22 caliber pistol and some tools were stolen sometime before 6 p.m. when he reported the theft.
Stolen, damaged
A TV was stolen and a safe damaged Tuesday at a Portland woman’s home.
Debra Bennett, 417 W. Votaw St., reported that a 48-inch TV was stolen from her home. She also told police that the lock on a safe in the home was damaged and her key will no longer work in the lock.
She reported the incident at 5:45 p.m.
Scooter stolen
A rural Portland man’s scooter was stolen while parked outside Pit’s Cocktail Lounge Monday night.
Donald Stipp, 4127 W. 200 South, parked his scooter outside Pit’s, 214 N. Meridian St., at 11 p.m. Monday and discovered that it had been stolen by midnight.
Stipp reported the theft at 9:47 a.m. Tuesday.
Horse accident
A vehicle driven by a rural Bryant woman struck a horse early this morning.
Roberta S. Taylor, 30, 4077 W. 650 North, Bryant, was driving west on county road 650 North near 650 West in Penn Township when she drove over a hill and was unable to avoid striking a horse, owned by Karen E. Barron, 6539 W. 650 North, Bryant, that was in the roadway.
Taylor received a citation for not insurance for her 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix and the horse’s caretaker, Kevin R. Miller, was issued a county ordinance citation for animals running at large.
Between $5,000 and $10,000 in damage was caused in the 3:55 a.m. accident.
Backing accident
A Portland man backed his vehicle into another car on Tuesday afternoon.
Vernon A. Gilbert, 45, was backing up in a parking spot on Meridian Street near Water Street when he hit a parked 2000 Pontiac Sunfire registered to Barbara Theurer and Samantha G. Theurer, Portland.
Damages of $1,000 to $2,500 were caused to the two vehicles in the 3:20 p.m. accident.
Cemetery vandalism
A rural Portland man reported possible acts of vandalism at a cemetery located on the grounds of the Jay County Conservation Club.
Jerry Monroe reported that sometime within the last few weeks someone knocked over some old headstones at the cemetery, located at 6243 S. 325 West, Portland.
Monroe is considering putting the cemetery on the Jay County Sheriff’s Office security checklist.
Fishing pole theft
A Coldwater, Ohio man reported items were missing from his barn in Portland.
Todd Buschur, 631 W. Main St., Coldwater, Ohio, reported that approximately 13 fishing poles and a tackle box were taken from a locked building on property along Ind. 67 near Jay County Landfill. Someone pried the doorjamb with another object to force it open and take the items sometime between June 3 and Saturday.[[In-content Ad]]
