John Hatton
John David Hatton, 45, Knightstown, the father of Portland residents, died Saturday at his home.
Born on Nov. 7, 1962, in Columbia City, to Delbert Lamar and Dorothy C. (Earl) Hatton, he was a 1981 graduate of Union City Community High School.
Surviving are three sons, including Quinton and Michael Hatton, both of Portland; a daughter, Susanah Hatton, Portland; his mother Dorothy Earl Hatton, Knightstown; a sister; a brother; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services are Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, corner of Oak and Plum Streets in Union City, with the Rev. James Hill officiating. Burial will be in Union City Cemetery.
Visitation is Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Reichard Funeral Home, 400 W. Deerfield Road, Union City.
Memorials may be sent to the family to establish a music scholarship at Union City Community High School in John's memory.
Esther Whitacre
Esther F. Whitacre, 84, 422 Reed St., Portland, died Tuesday at Persimmon Ridge, Portland.
She was born May 17, 1924, to Walter and Florentine (Miller) Loy. She married Joseph F. Whitacre on Dec. 29, 1924. He died June 10, 2007.
She worked for Naas Foods for more than 30 years and retired in 1986. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Portland, where she was a member of the Rosary Sodality. She also was a member of the Eagles Lodge and the Portland Moose Lodge.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph Whitacre, Fort Recovery, and Robert Whitacre, Palmetto, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Rex (Brenda) Ehrhart, Portland; a brother, Harold Loy, Arcola, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. Arthur (Edna) Garringer, Indianapolis; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services are Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert Moran presiding. Burial will be at Green Park Cemetery.
Calling hours are Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Baird-Freeman Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the donor of choice.
James Riley
James Anthony Riley, 46, Union City, Ohio, the father of a Portland woman, died Monday in Union City.
Born on June 4, 1961, in Union City, to James Lewis and Lois (Collins) Riley, his wife of five years Tracy R. (Sanders) Riley, survives.
Other survivors include three sons; five daughters, including Melissa Riley, Portland; his parents; two brothers; two sisters; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services are Friday at 11 a.m. at Calvary Assembly of God Church in Union City, with the Rev. Dale Boeger officiating.
