Capsule Reports

Clarification

Some Redkey residents apparently misunderstood a notification of a combined sewer overflow event over the weekend.

The town's water system was not contaminated; the overflow occurred into Halfway Creek when heavy rains overloaded the town's sewers and some storm and wastewater were discharged into the creek.

"It's not in the drinking water at all," Redkey Clerk-Treasurer Sandy Kirby said this morning.

Kirby said the town has received several calls from area residents concerned over the safety of the water supply. There is no danger to the town's water system, she said.

Habitat meeting

Jay County Habitat for Humanity will meet Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church. Paul and Helen Martin will speak about their Florida build experience.

Misses buggy, hits mailbox

A rural Pennville woman avoided hitting a horse and buggy in Jackson Township Tuesday, but struck a mailbox instead.

Ruth B. Skimahorn, 73, 6163 North 550 West, told Jay County police she was driving south on county road 550 West, north of county road 500 North. When she crested a hill, she saw a horse and buggy pulling out of a private drive on the east side of the road. In an attempt to avoid a collision, she swerved west, went off the road and struck a mailbox. The vehicle then served east and went off the east side of the road. The 2007 Toyota Yaris came to rest in a garden at 5621 North 550 West, Pennville.

The buggy was driven by Ester Wengerd, 6798 North 550 West, Pennville.

The 9 a.m. accident caused combined damage to the car, and the mailbox and garden, owned by Mary Neuenschwander, estimated at $1,000 to $2,500.[[In-content Ad]]
