Jill K. Behrman

A celebration of life service for Indiana University student Jill Kristen Behrman, 19, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 31 in First United Methodist Church, Bloomington, of which she was a member and youth-fellowship participant.

Behrman disappeared May 31, 2000, while riding her bike outside Bloomington. Her remains were found in Morgan County in March.

She is the daughter of former Portland residents, Eric and Marilyn (Naden) Behrman, Bloomington.

During her freshman year at IU, Behrman worked for the Student Recreational Sports Center, McDonald's at Reed Hall, IU Athletic Outfitters and Hoosiers for Higher Education. She was a 1999 graduate of Bloomington High School South, where she participated in volleyball and track and field, and was a LOTS Senior at Bradford Woods.

Behrman was a member of deCycles Indiana and Monroe County YMCA.

Previously, she was a member of the Indiana Track Club, Girls Inc., Boys & Girls Club of Bloomington, Monroe County 4-H and Girl Scouts, Tulip Trace Council.

Howard Saxman

Howard Wallace Saxman, 85, Portland, died Tuesday night at Adams County Memorial Hospital, Decatur.

Born to Phillip and Cora (Rarick) Saxman on Feb. 6, 1918 in Jay County, he graduated from Jefferson High School in Randolph County in 1934. He married Marjorie J. Warnock on Dec. 30, 1945. She survives.

A sewing machine mechanic at Jay Garment for over 50 years, he was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where he was a part of the Homemakers Sunday School class.

Other survivors include, one daughter, Mrs. Mick (Sharon) Fowler, rural Portland; one son, Vernon G. Saxman, Portland; a sister, Mildred Schmidt, LaCrosse, Kan.; four granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at the Portland Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home with Pasto Keith Olson officiating. Burial will follow in Green Park Cemetery.

Visitation is Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Riley Hospital for Children.

Kevin Nutter

Services for Kevin Mitchell Nutter, 48, Decatur, will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Thoma/Rich, Hewitt and Chaney Funeral Home, Bluffton, with the Rev. Steve Sutton officiating. Burial will be in Decatur Cemetery.

Visitation is today from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Nutter, the brother of a Ridgeville resident, died early Monday morning at Adams County Memorial Hospital, Decatur.

Born to Victor G. and Leone (Van Ness) Nutter in Wells County on Feb. 28, 1955, he married Elizabeth “Vern” Therrien in Bluffton on March 5, 1982. She survives. He had worked at Grinnell Fire Systems, Monroe, for five years.

Other survivors include one son; two sisters, including Susan Herring, Ridgeville; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Josephine Oberg

Josephine Oberg, 98, of Chicago, formerly of Geneva, died Monday at Glenbrook Hospital, in Glenview, IL.

Born August 31, 1904, in Albany, Indiana, the daughter of Charles and Mary Clarabell (Smith) Wood, she married Frank Oberg in 1928, and they lived in Dunkirk for 45 years while he worked for Indiana Glass. They moved to Geneva where she lived for 32 years. Her husband died on July 11, 1991.

She was the bookkeeper for her son, Neil and his business partner, Brad Cutler, for the Neil Oberg Interiors in Chicago for 26 years. She moved to Chicago to be near her son in 2000.

Surviving are son, Neil Oberg, Chicago; a sister, Dorothy Cole, Albany; a granddaughter; two great grandchildren; and several great nieces and nephews.

Private entombment will be in North Cemetery, St. Charles, Ill. Arrangements are being handled by the Norris Funeral Home, St. Charles, Ill.

Teresa McDavid

Teresa Diane McDavid, 39, Winchester, died Sunday night at Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis. She was a Portland native.

Born to Paul R. and Carol A. (Brumley) McDavid in Portland on July 25, 1963, she attended Jay County schools and earned her GED.

She worked at C.T.S. in Berne and at St. Gobain (formerly Ball Incon) in Dunkirk. She attended Chapelwood Baptist Church, Winchester.

Surviving are her father Paul, Portland; her mother Carol, Geneva; a grandmother, Cleo B. McDavid, Saratoga; one sister, Mrs. Tony (Beverly) Walser, Winchester; a brother, Dan R. McDavid, Portland; and several nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services are Thursday at 11 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home, Winchester, with the Rev. Russell Fraley officiating. Burial will follow in Saratoga Cemetery, Saratoga.

Visitation is today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

James Moran

James P. Moran, 88, Decatur, died Monday night from injuries received in an automobile accident that occurred earlier Monday near Geneva.

Born in Adams County on Jan. 31, 1915, to Patrick and Cora (Dickerhoff) Moran, he was a graduate of Jefferson Township High School, Adams County, and attended St. Joseph College, Rensselaer. He married Betty R. Ross in 1944 in Huntington. She died Jan. 3, 2000.

He had worked for General Electric, Decatur, and was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 1311, Elks Lodge No. 993, and the Knights of Columbus, all of Decatur. He was a member of St. Marys of the Presentation, Geneva.

Surviving are one sister, Mary H. Harpring, Geneva; and a niece.

Services are Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Marys of the Presentation with the Rev. J. Bosco Perera presiding. Burial will take place in St. Marys Catholic Cemetery, Geneva.

Visitation is Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Downing and Glancy Funeral Home, Geneva. A rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Masses at St. Marys.

Albert Pankey

Albert Pankey, 79, Eaton, died Monday following an extended illness. He retired from Indiana Glass, Dunkirk, in 1986 after 15 years of service.

Born in Marion, Ill., on Dec. 21, 1923, he was a 1942 Central High School graduate. He joined the Merchant Marines and served as a radioman in the South Pacific and the North Atlantic.

He worked as a farmer and as a distributor for Shell Oil Co., and was the co-owner/operator of Pankey’s Union 76 before working at Indiana Glass.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Wanda; one daughter, Deborah Rizzo, Eaton; one son, Dan Pankey, Arvada, Colo.; two grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.

Memorial graveside services are Friday at 2 p.m. at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Muncie. There is no visitation.

Garden View Funeral Home, Muncie, is handling the arrangements.

Floyd Confer

Floyd E. Confer, 95, Warren, died Wednesday morning at United Methodist Memorial Home, Warren. He was a relative of local residents.

Born on May 26, 1908, to Charles H. and Bertha (Lineberry) Confer in Blackford County, he was a 1926 graduate of Montpelier High School. He married Gladys M. Berrier on March 19, 1932 in Blackford County. She died June 5, 2001.

A member of the Independence Church of Christ, Hartford City, he was a deacon. He was active in the Republican Party.

He was a Washington Township Farmer and worked for the Blackford County School Corporation as a custodian and school bus driver. He also worked for the Highway Department out of the Ridgeville office.

Surviving are two sons, including Alvin Confer, Dunkirk; two sisters; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, including Anna F. Confer, Portland.

Services are Friday at 10 a.m. at Glancy Funeral Homes-Walker Chapel with the Revs. Jerry Pugh and Herschel Dyer presiding. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Muncie.

Visitation is Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
