Nine votes

Berne Mayor Blaine Fulton, who was beaten by nine votes in the Nov. 4 general election by former Jay County teacher and school administrator John Minch, is asking for a recount.

Minch, who has lived in Berne for the past 39 years, defeated Fulton, a Republican, by just nine votes (835-826).

A press release from Fulton noted that of the 1,696 ballots cast in Berne, 35 did not register a vote for either mayoral candidate.

Arrested

A Dunkirk man was arrested Tuesday by Jay County police on felony and misdemeanor charges.

Charles E. Pettus, 31, 126 S. Third St., was arrested for driving after being designated a habitual traffic violator, a class D felony, and driving with a blood alcohol level of .08 percent or more, a class C misdemeanor. Pettus’s driver’s license is suspended for 10 years.

Pettus was arrested after he was pulled over by police.

As of this morning, Pettus was being held on $4,500 bond at the Jay County Jail.

A bad idea

A truck driver crashed his semitrailer while trying to change clothes as he drove 60 mph on a northern Indiana highway, The Associated Press reported.

Terry Gilmore, 59, of Ohio, told investigators he had set his cruise control so he could change clothes while driving on U.S. 6 Monday night about 25 miles southwest of South Bend, the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department said.

He misjudged a curve and rolled the truck off the road and into two fences, police said. Gilmore was not seriously injured, but was taken to LaPorte Hospital as a precaution.

The crash caused officers to close a portion of the road for more than three hours.

A witness told investigators she found Gilmore naked when she went to check on him right after the accident.

No charges were filed in the crash, police said. A hometown for Gilmore was not available from police.

Deaths

Janice Elaine Miller, 65, Hartford City, member of a Dunkirk church.
