IMPROVING

The condition of a Portland boy who was critically injured last week when he fell out of a van has improved slightly.

Ian Q. Theurer, 5, remains in critical condition at Parkview Hospital.

Theurer was injured when he fell from a van driven by his mother, Michelle Markle, 1237 U.S. 27 North.

The accident happened while Markle and her daughter were delivering newspapers at Oakwood Mobile Home Park. A door in the van was left open and the boy fell out.

Ian is also the son and step-son of Randy and Barb Theurer, rural Portland.

BARN FIRE

Firefighters from Southwest Mercer County, Salamonia, Portland and Coldwater, Ohio departments were called to a chicken barn fire early this morning in northeastern Jay County.

Firefighters were called to Minnich Poultry Farms, 8129 East 300 North, at around 4 a.m. today.

Kim Day, Southwest Mercer County fire chief, said today that the fire was contained in an egg room of a smaller barn. He added that his department is still investigating the cause of the fire.

DEER ACCIDENTS

Cars driven by a rural Dunkirk woman and a Portland woman collided with deer on Tuesday evening.

At 6 p.m. Tuesday, Leona L. Pyle, 40, 328 1/2 S. Meridian St., collided with a deer while driving east on county road 200 South, about 1,500 feet east of Ind. 1 in Knox Township.

The collision caused damage to her 1996 Chevrolet Lumina estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.

At 10:30 p.m. Linda E. Miller, 53, 1190 North Ind. 1, struck a deer with her 1995 Mercury Sable while driving east on Ind. 18, about 2,000 feet west of county road 250 West in Jackson Township. Damage to her car was estimated between $750 and $1,000.

Jay County police investigated both accidents.[[In-content Ad]]
