Offices closed
City of Portland offices will be closed Friday for Veteran’s Day.
Trash normally collected on Friday will instead be picked up Monday. The city recycling schedule will not be affected.
Rear-ended
A pick-up truck driven by a rural Portland man was rear-ended about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday on Ind. 67 at Como Road.
Richard D. Nixon, 79, 3708 S. Mount Pleasant Road, told Jay County police he had stopped to make a left turn onto Como Road and was allowing oncoming traffic to pass when his 1996 Dodge Dakota was struck from behind.
Richard G. Phillips, 88, 4233 S. 1000 West, Redkey, was headed southwest on Ind. 67. He told police he looked down momentarily and was unable to stop when he saw the Nixon truck stopped. His 1995 Mercury Marquis sustained serious front-end damage and was towed from the scene.
Damage to the two vehicles totaled between $5,000 and $10,000. No injuries were reported.
Strikes deer
A pick-up truck driven by a rural Bluffton man received $1,000 to $2,500 in damage when it struck a deer about 5:35 p.m. Monday on county road 500 North near U.S. 27.
Rickey D. Twigg, 52, 8175 S. 700 East, Bluffton, told Jay County police he was eastbound in a 2003 Ford Ranger when the deer ran into his path.
Lockbox taken
A Portland man reported that his mother’s lockbox and some medications were taken.
Bob Jackson told police that the box containing personal papers and some medications were stolen from her home at 1120 Miller Avenue sometime before 8:45 p.m. Tuesday.
TV stolen
Someone broke a window and stole a TV from a Portland home Tuesday.
Jennifer Hudson, 203 E. Third St., reported that someone broke a window and stole a TV from her boyfriend’s house. She reported the burglary at 3:32 p.m.
Rear-end accident
A pick-up truck driven by a rural Portland man rear-ended another vehicle Monday afternoon at Votaw and Meridian streets in Portland.
Steven M. Rines, 20, 3139 W. 200 North, Portland, was stopped eastbound on Votaw Street at Meridian Street when he thought the vehicle in front of him, driven by Rebecca A. Caylor, 50, 5364 W. 900 South, Ridgeville, began to move. Rines drove forward, striking the rear of Caylor’s car.
Estimated damages of $1,000 to $2,500 were caused to Rines’ 1985 GMC K15 pickup, registered to Stanley K. Rines, same address as driver, and Caylor’s 2005 Dodge Neon, registered to Chance E. Rhoads, same address as driver.
The accident occurred at 3:07 p.m.
Hits a deer
A pick-up truck driven by Lonnie Wagner, 38, rural Portland, struck a deer about 7:20 p.m. Saturday on Ind. 218, east of Wells County road 600 West.
Wagner told police the deer was being chased by a coyote. Damage was estimated at more than $1,000.
In area courts
Megan A. Gillette, 21, and Nathan D.J. Frederick, 20, both of 105 W. Center St., Fort Recovery, pleaded guilty in Celina Municipal Court last week to charges of persistent disorderly conduct. Both received 30-day suspended jail sentences on the condition that no laws are violated for two years and that they take all required medications.
In the same court, Justin D. Prosser, 34, Fort Recovery was fined $15 for speeding; Adam Siegrist, 28, Fort Recovery, was fined $30 for a seat belt violation; and John Bruggeman, 54, Portland, was fined $30 for a seat belt violation.[[In-content Ad]]
