WRONG PEDAL

A Portland man drove into his neighbor’s garage and car after he accidentally pushed the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal of his van Wednesday at 3:40 p.m.

Clarence D. Degler, 88, 104 Williamson Drive, was transported by Jay Emergency Medical Service for minor bleeding on his face following the collision.

He told Portland police he was attempting to back into his garage when he struck the wall of the garage. Degler said that he pulled forward and attempted to push the brake pedal but accidentally pushed the gas pedal. His 1987 Chevrolet Astro van traveled into the street and across a median, striking a tree. The van continued into a driveway and collided with a garage and 1996 Buick LeSabre, owned by Elma L. Fultz, 103 Williamson Drive. The impact caused Fultz’s parked car to go through the interior wall of the garage and strike a freezer and a washer and dryer.

Damage to the two vehicles, along with Fultz’s home, washer, dryer and freezer was estimated between $25,000 and $50,000.

SIX INJURED

Six Fort Recovery teenagers were injured in a one vehicle accident on Sunday at 2:22 a.m. in Mercer County.

Daniel B. Rammel, 18, 305 S. Main Street., the driver of the car, told Mercer County police he was driving west on Ohio 119, west of Lowry Road in Gibson Township, when he drove off of the south side of the road and struck a guardrail. The 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass then traveled to the north side of the road and struck a guardrail. Then the car traveled back to the south side of the road and jumped the guardrail before striking a ditch, spinning around and coming to rest in the ditch facing north.

Rammel, passengers Amber D. Bergman, 17, 130 N. Wayne St. and Kanoe C. Sinenci, 14, 507 E. Boundary St. were transported to Mercer County Community Hospital for their injuries.

Passengers Ryan M. Staugler, 16, 501 N. First St., Travis R. VanSkyock, 15, 1809 Flaler Road and Trent M. Brunswick, 16, 370 New Weston-Fort Loramie Road, were transported to Jay County Hospital.

No additional information on the medical condition of the teenagers was available from police. Officials from the Mercer County police said that the car was traveling at 55 mph at the time of the accident.

Rammel was cited by police for driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to maintain control of the vehicle.

Fort Recovery police and Southwest Mercer Fire Department also responded to the accident.

CHAIRS STOLEN

Two rocking chairs were stolen from the porch of a East Division Road home on Tuesday afternoon.

Gary Powers, 2172 East Division Road, told Jay County police that two swivel rocking chairs, valued at $189 each, were taken from the porch of his home.

The theft occurred sometime between 1:20 and 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Also according to the report, the suspect or suspects entered Powers’ garage and home. No additional items were reported stolen.

MERCER ACCIDENT

Vehicles driven by two Portland teenagers collided in Butler Township in Mercer County on Saturday at 6:04 p.m.

The accident occurred on U.S. 127 at the intersection of Johnston Road.

Lee W. Huelskamp, 16, told Mercer County police he was driving north on U.S. 127 when he slowed for another vehicle in front of him. A car driven by David M. Minnich, 16, struck the rear of Huelskamp’s pickup truck.

Minnich was cited for following too closely.

Huelskamp’s car sustained heavy damage and Minnich’s truck sustained minor damage, according to Mercer County police.
