Weekend will include two parties

As I See It

By Diana Dolecki-

I was expecting to go to Mom’s this weekend to celebrate my brother David’s birthday. I called him to find out what kind of cake he wanted. There was no answer so I left a message. A couple of days later I called again. This time he answered.
He said he had gotten the earlier message and intended to call me. The problem was that he had gotten a new phone. This phone saves voice messages as text messages. However, the technology isn’t perfect. My question of, “What kind of cake do you want?” was translated as “What kind of money will you bring?”
After we got that straightened out, he told me that I didn’t need to make a cake as he wasn’t going to be home this weekend. He was going to some festival in Cincinnati. But since my other brother, Michael, is getting married next weekend we could combine the two celebrations, and we could eat wedding cake.
This presents yet another problem, other than the fact that I don’t like wedding cake. I had intended to pin Michael down about the exact location of the church and a few other details. Now that I don’t need to get together with everybody this weekend, I will have to try to get Michael to answer his phone. This is easier said than done as I never know when he will be home or which phone will be working at any given moment.
I told David that he had messed up all my plans. He laughed. I told him that I had bought a present for him and everything. I even got him a card and not the one with the singing underwear. I didn’t tell him I got the musical one with the dancing chicken to retaliate for the singing toilet card he bought for my birthday. I asked if he was going to be the best man at the wedding. He said he didn’t know. I told him that Mom said he was. So now both of us have to contact Michael.

Since I didn’t need to bake a cake, I spent most of Saturday outside piddling around. It was far too pretty outside to waste the day indoors. I was cheered to see the tips of the onions I planted during the last warm spell poking up through the soil. The radishes at the ends of the rows have unfolded their dark green cotyledons and are considering growing their true leaves.
I started cleaning out the compost bin and was surprised to find actual compost. Plus something had made a nest in one corner. Whatever it was will have to rebuild its home as I messed it all up. I hope it isn’t those black squirrels that insist on peppering the lawn with holes.
The tulips are in their prime and brighten up the flower beds. I cut a bouquet for the neighbor lady and one for us. The forsythia is like solid sunshine hovering under the maple tree. The daffodils are mostly done for the year, and the rest of the perennials are awaiting their time to shine.
Sometime this week I need to go shopping for little-boy toys. Our youngest grandson, Nicholas, turns two on Sunday. I am told he likes bugs, trucks and electronics. He can find the dinosaurs on his mom’s phone, but unlike his siblings when they were that age, he hasn’t called me yet.
After all the mayhem in the news last week it is a relief to be worrying about mundane things like brother’s birthdays, a wedding and little-boy toys. Plus it feels wonderful to be working outside in the sunshine again.[[In-content Ad]]
