Wellman leads Muncie to title

MUNCIE - Billy Wellman started slowly. He more than made up for it in his final two games of the weekend.
The Jay County High School graduate hit home runs Saturday and Sunday to help lead the Muncie Chiefs American Legion baseball team to the sectional championship.
After striking out three times in Friday's tournament opener, Wellman's bat keyed victories of 15-2 over Carmel and 14-4 in eight innings over Anderson.
Wellman bounced back from his difficult first game with a home run and a double in a four-hit effort against Carmel.
He finished the game with five RBIs.
He kick-started the Muncie offense with a three-run home run to left field as part of a seven-run second inning in the win over Anderson.
Jay places sixth
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Jay County High School cheerleading squad earned a pair of sixth-place trophies at the Universal Cheerleader's Association camp hosted July 15-18 at the University of Kentucky.
Jay County earned its awards in the medium varsity division for cheer and extreme routine at the camp, which included 1,000 participants. It also earned blue ribbons and the spirit stick award in daily evaluations.
Seniors Kari Hemmelgarn and Rachel McKinley were honored as All Americans.
Other members of the squad are seniors Kyla Baldwin, Kami Hicks, Michelle Landfair, Hannah Redwine and Kristen Selvey; juniors Kristen Ainsworth, Melynda Brackman, Ashley Caupp, Erin Hunt, Alysia Mann, Jordan McMillan and Megan Taylor; and sophomores Darian Barnett, Nikka Chaney, Jessi Chittum, Lyndee Evans, Nachelle Miller, Shelby Pryor and Krista Taylor.
Two score four
DUNKIRK - Zacheriah Throop and Pacie Denney led their teams to victory Friday in the final games of the year in the West Jay Community Center Summer Soccer League.
Throop scored four times to lift the Whales to a 5-4 win over the Sharks, and Denney scored all of his team's goals in a 4-2 victory against the Sting Rays. Makenzie Newsome added a goal in the Whales' win.
Ryder Barger tallied three scores for the Sharks.
Panthers fall short
The Jay County Panthers minor league football team suffered a 32-14 defeat to the New York Renegades.
Jay County trailed just 14-6 at halftime and was within six points at the close of the third quarter. However, the Renegades pulled away with 12 fourth-quarter points for the victory.
Jason Swearigin led Jay County, finishing 7-of-16 passing for 210 yards. He added 55 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Andy Costello, a Jay County High School graduate, had kickoff returns of 34 and 45 yards.[[In-content Ad]]
