Wellman leads Patriot golfers

FARMLAND - Chase Wellman turned in a tremendous putting performance to lift the Jay County High school boys golf team to a 169-170 victory Thursday over the host Wapahani Raiders.
Wellman, who shot 45 at Hickory Hills during the regular season last year and 80 at the sectional meet, played a career-best round with a 2-over-par 37 at Hickory Hills Golf Club. He opened with a birdie on the par-5 first hole and became a par machine beginning with the 321-yard, par-4 fourth.
The senior racked up five straight pars on the fourth through eighth holes before bogeying the ninth as he finished as the match medalist. He used just 12 putts, five fewer than anyone else on the team.
Adam Gray had four pars in his round as he scored 40, and Adam Horn birdied the 305-yard, par-4 third hole on the way to a 45. A.J. Fuska and Brad Horn had two pars apiece as they each shot 47.
Junior varsity
Adam Mescher shot a 42 to lead Jay County to a 188-224 win over the Raiders.
Mescher had four pars in a row before a birdie on the 355-yard, par-4 sixth. Drew Houck followed with a 45, and Justen Keller shot 49.
Seth Ainsworth completed the team score with a 52, and Adam Daniels shot 56.[[In-content Ad]]
