Wellman, Speed named All-OAC (03/18/2009)

Three Jay County High School players were voted to the All-Olympic Athletic Conference basketball teams Monday.

Juniors Lindsey Wellman and Pazia Speed earned the honor for the Patriot girls team, which won the OAC title and finished 18-0 in the regular season. Senior point guard Kyle Simmons was voted to the All-OAC boys team.

Wellman led the Patriots in scoring with 14.9 points per game while shooting 41.4 percent from 3-point range. She led the team with 6.2 rebounds per game and had 26 3-pointers, 33 steals and 31 assists.

Speed shot 54 percent from the field and 81 percent from the line as she scored 12.3 points per game. She led JCHS with 39 steals while adding 4.9 rebounds per game and 54 assists.

Simmons scored 9.2 points per game for the Patriot boys while leading the team with 90 assists and 23 steals. He also had 2.5 rebounds per game.

Teeter named All-ACAC

South Adams High School's Nick Teeter was recently voted to the All-Allen County Athletic Conference boys basketball team.

Teeter was the lone first-team selection for the Starfires. Caleb Armenta and Chris Stutzman earned second-team honors.

Wrestlers Jackson Werst, Jim West and Todd Batt also earned first-team All-ACAC awards based on their performances in the conference tournament. Second-teamers were Josh Ehr, T.J. Burnfield and Chase Sprunger.

Five SAHS athletes earned the academic all-conference award, which is given to senior letter winners who have a grade point average of 3.4 or higher. Picking up the honor were Tara Beitler and Jacie Yoder of the girls basketball team, Kyle DeArmond and Cody Meshberger from the boys basketball team and wrestling manager Kara Lehman.

Four win titles

OWENTON, Ky. - Members of Portland's Judan Judo competed Saturday at the Owenton County Invitational with four bringing home championships.

Isabelle Minnich finished first in the 9-10-year-old lightweight division, and Kendra Bickel won the 9-10-year-old middleweight class. Betsi Gagle was first in women's middleweight, and Gabrielle Minnich took the top spot in 10-12-year-old middleweight.

Earning runner-up honors were Jimmy Miller, Kendra Bickel and Gabrielle Minnich. Adam Wilhelm placed third.

Also Saturday Judan's Kelsi Bostic competed at the Illinois State Open Championships in Yorkville, Ill. She won the women's advanced middleweight division.[[In-content Ad]]
