Wellman's four goals power JCHS (08/28/07)
Local roundup
Hat tricks are rare in the full 80 minutes. Brianne Wellman got hers in about 25.
Wellman wrapped up her hat trick in a hurry and accounted for nearly half of the Jay County High School girls soccer team's goals Monday in a 9-2 destruction of the visiting Connersville Spartans.
A Loryn Horn assist led to Wellman's first goal of the game less than seven minutes into the contest. Connersville tied the score at one, but Wellman put the Patriots ahead for good and then turned over the attack to her teammates.
The JCHS junior blasted down the middle of the field for her second goal, then hit the back of the net again just 4½ minutes later. By halftime the Patriots had a 6-1 lead.
Wellman scored again just 14 seconds into the second half - she connected on each of her four shots on goal in the game - as the Jay County (2-1) dominated its Olympic Athletic Conference opener.
Sophomore Pazia Speed added a pair of scores, and Dana Horn, Kaelee Keller and Meagan Logue each had one goal. Patriot goalie Abby Loy finished with 15 saves.
