West Jay names top students
Taking Note
West Jay Middle School recently named its Students of the Month for December.
In sixth grade was Holton Hill, the son of Shane and Dianna Hill.
In seventh grade was Courtney Cox, the daughter of Kenneth and Carla Cox.
In eighth grade was Drew Huffman, the son of Chuck and Susan Huffman.
Robotics
Jay County Robotics held a Border Wars VEX qualifying event on Saturday at the high school with 43 teams competing from across the state. Jay County teams 1193B and 1193A qualified for Worlds.
Jay County team 1193B won the Design Award and the Excellence Award. The team consists of sophomores Austin Wendel and Darren DeRome and juniors Ethan Bost, Zec Landers and Emily Morris.
Team 1193A won the Skills Driving Award. The teams consists of seniors Matt Dann and Caleb Hummel, sophomore Cydney Huey and freshmen Tyler Wendel and Ian Bentz.
New name
The Polar Bear Dip in Hamilton has received a new name in honor of Portland native Jack D. Gibson.
Gibson, who lived in Hamiton and was a member of the Hamilton Lions Club, died on August 19 after a battle with cancer. The club has renamed its Polar Bear Dip to the Jack D. Gibson Memorial Polar Bear Dip.
The event will take place Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. on the beach on Hamilton Lake. Pledges will be taken for anyone taking the plunge and proceeds will go toward the Jack D. Gibson scholarship fund in Hamilton and Garrett schools.
Donations may be sent to Hamilton Lions Club, P.O. Box 412, Hamilton, IN 46742.
Soldier museum
The Museum of the Soldier, 510 E. Arch St. in Portland, will soon have a new display.
The museum has recently received a large collection of memorabilia from Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis, which closed several years ago. The fort opened in 1908 and was home to the Army Finance Center and prior to World War II was the home of the 1909 11th Infantry Regiment.
