West Jay picks top students (3/1/05)
Taking Note
Students of the month for February at West Jay Middle School have been announced.
Students named include sixth grade student Kimberly Nibarger, the daughter of Steve and Darlene Nibarger; seventh grader Sarah Shrack, the daughter of Mike and Cindy Shrack; and eighth grader Ethan Gonser. His parents are Michelle Downing and Robert Gonser.
NUTRITION DAY
LifeStream Services of East Central Indiana will celebrate Nutrition Awareness Day on Wednesday, March 9. The special menu will be marinated chicken breast, rice pilaf, buttered asparagus pieces, glazed carrots, wheat roll, cranberry salad and fruit pie.
Newcomers are invited to enjoy this special meal at Portland Place Senior Cafe, 430 W. Lafayette St. in Portland. The meal will be served at 11:30 a.m.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Applications for the Glenn D. Peters Law Scholarship are available for law students in Jay and surrounding counties. The scholarship will be awarded based on past academic accomplishments and activities and need will also be a consideration.
Applications are available at the office of Hinkle, Racster, Lopez and Clamme at 121 W. High St. in Portland or by calling (219) 853-2115.
The application deadline is June 1, 2005.
CHANCELLOR’S LIST
Erin McLaughlin, a 2003 graduate of Jay County High School, made the chancellor’s list for the fall semester at I.U. East in Richmond.
She is a sophomore studying elementary education and the daughter of Curt and Tammy McLaughlin, Portland.
To make the chancellor’s list, students must maintain a GPA of 4.0 or higher.
LOW INTEREST LOANS
Low interest rate loans are available for individuals and businesses to help recover from storm damage from Jan. 1 through Feb. 11, 2005.
The area outreach center is at Jay County Circuit Court, 121 N. Court St. No. 3, in Portland. Loan applications and assistance in completing them will be available. You may also call 1-800-659-2955.
MINNETRISTA EVENTS
The roots of jazz and American music will be presented as part of the adult lecture series program at Minnetrista Cultural Center on Wednesday, March 9, at 7 p.m.
