West Jay spikers sweep East Jay

DUNKIRK — The West Jay Middle School seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams defeated the visiting East Jay Chiefs on Tuesday.
The eighth grade Eagles won 17-19, 15-9, 15-8, and the seventh graders beat the Chiefs 20-25, 25-19, 15-10.
Kady Finnerty led the eighth-grade Eagles with 11 service points, while Kaelyn Weaver had eight and Mackenzie Adkins added four. Chloe Trissel notched five kills for West Jay.
For East Jay, Kaylee Inman had a team-high five points, and Irene Braun added four points and five digs. Alayna Aparicio led the Chiefs with two kills, and also added five digs.
Randi Ferguson led the seventh grade Eagles with 13 service points, including five aces. Rhegan Shimp added six points, while Shelby Caldwell scored five and Molly Ault and Kendal Garringer each had four points for West Jay.
Gwen Omstead led the Chiefs with nine points, Hanna Dillon had seven points and Gwen Butcher and Kailee Denney each added three.
Omstead had a team-high four kills, and Maggie Pryor tallied four digs.

Eagles blank Warriors
DUNKIRK — The West Jay seventh and eighth grade football teams shut out the visiting Wes-Del Warriors Tuesday.
Mitchell Ferguson led the eighth grade Eagles (2-0) with two rushing touchdowns in the 39-0 victory over the Warriors. Gabe Faulkner and Wyatt Geesaman both had three TDs for the West Jay (2-0) seventh graders as they beat the Warriors 40-0.
Holton Hill completed two passes for 75 yards and a touchdown. Cole Stigleman scored a TD, and Connor Davis returned a block punt 50 yards for a score.
Dawson Seyler and Nathan Hamilton led the Eagles with six tackles each, while Andrew Lesvasseur and Danny Kilgore had five stops apiece.
Faulkner was 2-of-4 passing for 58 yards and two TDs for the seventh graders, and added a rushing TD on three attempts for 96 yards. Geesaman scored two rushing TDs and scored another on a pass from Faulkner.
Nick Raines led the Eagles’ defense with four tackles, while Noah Harris and Kobe Bennett each added three tackles and a fumble recovery.

Starfires fall to Lions
BERNE — The Leo Lions defeated the South Adams volleyball team Tuesday, 25-13, 25-14, 25-16.
Alyssa Bluhm led the Starfires in kills for the second straight match with five. She also added four blocks, four assists and two digs.
Cady Farlow recorded a team-high 11 digs defensively, and also had two kills. Emma Rosswurm added nine assist, and Morgan Alberson tallied three digs, two aces and one kill for the Starfires.

Stuber goes off
BERNE — Joe Stuber amassed 261 total yards and six touchdowns as the host South Adams Middle School eighth grade football team defeated the Heritage Patriots 40-7 Tuesday.
Stuber rushed 12 times for 133 yards and three touchdowns, and added three more TDs through the air on 5-of-5 passing for 128 yards.
Terry Dawn caught all five of Stuber’s passes and Victor Vasquez rushed for 52 yards on seven carries.
Grant Shaffer led Starfires (3-0, 2-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) with 13 tackles and Stuber added nine stops.
South Adams forced three Patriot turnovers, including fumble recoveries by Bodin Sikes and Sabastian Hackman, while Dawn added an interception.
The Starfires return to the gridiron Sept. 24 against the Leo Lions.[[In-content Ad]]
