West Jay splits with Union City (11/25/05)

UNION CITY — West Jay’s boys basketball teams split games Tuesday night against the Union City Indians. The Eagle eighth grade team rolled to a 43-29 victory while the seventh graders fell 33-25.
The West Jay eighth graders held Union City to nine first-half points, taking a 13-point lead at halftime en route to the win. Taylor Farmer paced the team with 12 points while Josh Beaty added eight and John Pettus scored seven.
The seventh grade team trailed by just two points after the first quarter, but fell by 11 after three periods and could not rally. Ryan Miskinis scored a team-best eight points, and Anthony Skeens added seven.
Locally-owned horse wins
TOLEDO, Ohio — Whata Good Fella, a horse owned by Portland’s Carrie and Shari Kelley, picked up a win at Raceway Park in Toledo, Ohio, Sunday.
The horse, which is trained by Shari Kelley and was driven by Ryan Stahl, was in fourth place out of the gate and remained their until the 3/4 pole. It then made a run toward the front, winning by a nose in a career-best time of 1:57.2.
Jay grapplers second
NEW CASTLE — Jay County’s wrestling team got off to a good start Saturday, finishing second at the eight-team New Castle Super Duals.
The Patriots scored victories over Columbus East, Providence, Lincoln, Milan and Huntington North. They lost to Westfield and New Castle, but finished ahead of New Castle overall on a tie-breaker.
Bill Spahr (171) had a perfect day, going 7-0, while fellow senior Kurt Hess (145) finished 6-1. Nathan Daniels (135), Matt Daniels (152), Robert Ralston (160) and Jason Crouch (HVY) each finished 5-2.
Also coming away with winning records were Josh Lochtefeld at 4-1, Casey Kenney at 2-0 and Tom Smith and Nathan Conatser each at 4-3.[[In-content Ad]]
