Westgerdes, Roessner lead Tribe girls (04/01/04)

Kristi Westgerdes and Vicki Roessner each grabbed a couple of victories, but it was not quite enough as the Fort Recovery girls track team finished second in Tuesday’s three-team meet with 56 points. The boys team was third in close one with 50 points.

Crestview won the girls competition with 67 points, and Parkway was a distant third with 28. Parkway took the boys win with 67 points, followed by Crestview with 56.

Westgerdes took care of the sprints for the Indians, while Roessner had no problems in the hurdles in her first high school meet.

Westgerdes opened with a win in the 100-meter dash, finishing ahead of teammate Julie Link with a time of 14.49 seconds. She also won the 200-meter dash in 30.45.

Roessner, a freshman, dominated the 300-meter hurdles by more than three seconds in 54.34. She also was first in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.48.

Fort Recovery had one other win in the girls competition. Westgerdes and Link teamed with Holly Stein and Rike Knuth to take the 4x400-meter relay in 5-minutes, 11.33 seconds.

Tom Roessner provided the only two wins for the boys team. He was victorious in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.87, and pulled off a win in the 300-meter hurdles in 46.3.

Fort Recovery’s next meet is at home today against Anna and Botkins at 5 p.m.

Browns in Fort

A pair of Cleveland Browns will appear at the Fort Recovery American Legion hall Sunday.

Current Browns cornerback Michael Lehan and former player and current broadcaster Doug Dieken will be in Fort Recovery Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. There will be an autograph session as well as food and door prizes.

Blackford coach out

When Jay County and Blackford start playing each other twice a year next season they will be doing so with a new coach leading the Bruins.

Chris Hoke ended his two-year term at the helm of the Blackford boys basketball program as he resigned earlier this week. He compiled a 7-34 record, including a 5-16 mark this year, finishing with a 62-60 sectional loss to Elwood to end the 2003-04 season.

Hoke cited personal and professional reasons for his resignation, but he plans to stay at Blackford as a physics teacher.

Football combine

Hoosier Gridiron will conduct its spring high school football combine Sunday, May 16 at DePauw University in Greencastle.

The combine is designed to allow high school students to perform in front of college football recruiters. It is open to any player in grades 9 through 12.

Each participant will be evaluated in the 40-yard dash, bench press, vertical jump, standing long jump, pro-agility run and four-corner run. There will also be position drills.

There will be an informational session for parents and students about he NCAA Clearinghouse, financial aid, NCAA recruiting rules and college admissions.

Volleyball summer camp

Purdue University will host three volleyball camps this summer for players ages 11 through 18.

An elite hitter, setter and libero camp for 14- to 18-year-olds will be from July 9 through 11, and a general skills camp for 11- to 18-year-olds will be held from July 12 through 14.

A high school team camp and coaches clinic will be from July 16 through 19.
