Why do we find gluttony entertaining?

As I See It

By Diana Dolecki-

We were watching television the other day when we happened upon the most obscene program I have ever watched. We stared at the screen in fascination as we had never experienced anything like it before.

It was a program called Man v Food. The premise of the show seemed to be a guy going around the country gorging himself on ridiculous amounts of food such as a "Big Ben" which included "a full slab of ribs, two sandwiches, a quarter-chicken, and four side dishes" or a 4,800-calorie hamburger with 300 grams of fat. This was followed by a failed attempt to drink five 24-ounce milkshakes in one sitting. I certainly hope each segment of the show was filmed on separate days.

Most of the featured dishes contained enough food to feed my entire family - with leftovers. Why is gluttony entertaining?

I have had an ongoing battle with restaurants. When I go out to eat I want a reasonable amount of food at a reasonable price. I do not want someone to place a turkey platter in front of me. I do not want chocolate chip pancakes hanging off the edges like I received at a breakfast place one time.

I do not want enough food to last the rest of the week. I want a single, well-balanced meal. Most of all I do not want to have to order a child's portion or order from the senior menu. I also do not want a quart of soda to go with my meal.

Apparently I am unreasonable.

I understand that pop is cheap and by giving people more than they need it cuts down on the number of trips to the table that the serving staff has to make. I also understand that to be featured on a television programs such as the one above is worth more in advertising dollars than the value of the food.

Doesn't anybody else see the irony? We are having difficult economic times. Jobs are in peril. We are told to cut back on expenses. Food banks are crying for supplies.

Plus there is the growing obesity epidemic in this country with the resulting health problems extra weight causes. And yet, we have a television show glorifying the consumption of obscene amounts of food.

Something is wrong.

For the record, my dictionary defines obscene as "disgusting to the senses; abhorrent to morality or virtue." This show certainly qualifies.

Some people only apply the word obscene to nudity or sex. I beg to differ. There is nothing obscene about a naked toddler or even a naked person of any age. After all, the God of our Bible didn't get upset until Adam and Eve covered themselves so who are we to object to nudity? It's just that most of us look better dressed than undressed. I know I certainly do.

A breast-feeding mother typically shows less skin than the average teenager. There aren't even any obscene words; just obscene meanings.

I find excess in any form, intolerance and cruelty to be obscene. Unfortunately television seems to disagree with me. So does the American public. Sigh. I guess I will just have to go on tilting at windmills.
