Williams leads JC to 2nd at invite (12/22/03)

Jay County improved by more than a full point over its first meet of the season, scoring a 95.40 as it finished second at the Richmond Invitational Saturday.

Center Grove, last year’s fourth-place team in the state meet, won the three-team gymnastics event with 103.80. The host Red Devils were third with 78.

Sophomore Hannah Williams topped the Patriots in every event on the way to a second-place all-around finish. She scored 35.00 in the all-around behind a 35.85 from Center Grove’s Natalie Helser.

Williams’ best mark in an individual event came on the balance beam. She scored a 9.2, outdistancing the rest of the field by nearly a full point to win the event.

She was second in the vault with a 9.1, third in the floor exercise with an 8.6 and fourth on the uneven parallel bars at 8.1.

Senior Amanda Knight placed in the top six twice, taking fourth in the vault with an 8.65. Brittany Bauman was sixth in the event with an 8.4 to put three Patriots in the top six.

Knight added a fifth-place effort in the beam with a 6.95.

A couple of Laceys also cracked the top six.

Junior Lacey Grider finished in a tie for fifth in the floor with a 7.9, and freshman Lacey Thornburg was sixth in the bars with a 7.8. Grider was seventh in the all-around at 28.7.

Jay County now gets a three-week break before taking on Blackford and Marion in Hartford City Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 6:45 p.m.

First half dooms Fort

The Fort Recovery boys basketball team fell back into its pattern of early struggles as the Crestview Knights dominated the Indians in the first half on the way to a 68-43 thumping.

Crestview owned the first half, grabbing a 34-12 halftime lead. The Tribe made just five field goals and shot 29 percent before the intermission.

John Bihn paced Fort Recovery (3-3) with 12 points and nine rebounds. Dusty Tobe was the only other player on the team in double figures as he finished with 11.

Andy Shindeldecker, Evan Purmot and Luke Lichtensteiger each had 14 points for Crestview, which took advantage of 26 Indian turnovers. Lichtensteiger finished with seven rebounds, and Purmot added four steals.

Fort Recovery also lost the junior varsity contest with slow starts to each half. Crestview outscored the Indians 12-5 in the first quarter and 16-5 in the third quarter in a 62-38 victory.

Tyler Thobe scored 11 points for the Tribe, and Stan Roessner and Trent Brunswick each had eight. Jason VanSkyock added seven rebounds.

Adam Motycka had 15 points and six rebounds for Crestview, and Matt Perkins also had 15 points.

The Indians will play again Saturday at Ansonia at 6:30 p.m.

Jay 6th at Invite

Jay County’s swim teams struggled at the Connersville Invitational Saturday, each finishing at the bottom of the six-team event. The girls team tied with Columbus East with 107 points, and the boys team scored 117.5 points.

East Central won the boys competition with 327 points and the girls competition with 351.

The Patriots came away with just one victory, with senior Sarah Miller taking first in diving. She scored a 382.90 to outdistance the field by more than 50 points.

There were just two other top-three finishes for Jay County, both from the boys team.

Matt Peterson added another solid diving performance. He was second with 276.60 points, edging Billy Hall of Centervile by one tenth.

Daniel Fisher also placed second in a tight race in the 100-yard breaststroke. He knocked off East Central’s Alex Nobbe by one hundredth of a second.

Jay County’s divers will do battle in the Elite Diving Invitational at Ben Davis Saturday, Dec. 27 at 9 a.m. The next dual meet for Jay County is Thursday, January 8 at Bellmont at 5:30 p.m.

FR girls victorious

Fort Recovery’s freshman girls basketball team blasted the Marion Local Flyers Saturday 49-13.

The Indians (2-1) didn’t allow more than five points in any quarter. They shut out Marion Local 11-0 third on the way to the 36-point win.

Abby Niekamp led three players in double figures with 19 points. Lauren Wenning added 13 points, and Sandra Sudhoff scored 10.

Brittany Brackman paced the Indians with five rebounds. Wenning and Niekamp each had four.

Fort boys stumble

The Fort Recovery freshman boys basketball team dropped to 0-3 in a 50-27 loss to the Botkins Trojans Saturday.

The Tribe was outscored in each quarter, and allowed 33 points in the second and third combined in the defeat.

Kraig Wendel had a team-high with eight points, and Troy Dilworth and Tony Diller each added seven. Kenton Sudhoff and Matt Tobe scored six points apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
