Winners given for Juried Exhibition at Arts Place (10/25/05)

Arts Place in Portland recently held its Sixth Harvest Biennial Regional Juried Exhibition. More than 100 works of art were entered from artists from Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan and Kentucky.
Pamela DeMarris, Muncie, won best of show for her chromogenic print on canvas. Winning honor awards were Jim Faulkner, Yorktown, for his watercolor; David Humphrey, Pendleton, for a photograph; Steven R. McClung, Portland, for an oil on linen. Winning judge’s recognition were Mary A. Markley, Yoder, for an oil painting, and Tony Utley, Indianapolis, for a pencil and airbrush.
The 39 works of art selected for the exhibition will be on display at Arts Place through Nov. 23. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday through Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Oil painting classes
Arts Place in Portland is now accepting applications for Oil Painting for Adults with Steve McClung. The classes are for students of all ability levels and are offered in three six-week sessions. They will be held each Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The first session began Oct. 18, and will continue through Nov. 22. The next session is Jan. 10, 2005 through Feb. 14 and the last session is April 4 through May 9. Each session costs $90 and includes supplies.

Children’s Museum
Muncie Children’s Museum will have Fall Break is Fun activities on Thursday, Oct. 27, and Friday, Oct. 28. On Thursday Fall Leaves Fall Art activity begins at 10:30 a.m., Caterpillar Painting activity is at 11:30, Fall Leaves Fall Art activity at 1 p.m. and Creative crafts at 3:30 p.m.
On Friday Fall Leaves Fall Art activity begins at 10:30 a.m., Scarecrow activity and story is at 11:30, Fall Leaf Wreath is at 1 p.m. and Sensational Science Optics activity is at 3:30 p.m.

Friends and Family Fun Night will be on Friday, Nov. 4, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Muncie Children’s Museum. Ball State Theater Education students will present plays based on favorite children’s stories. On Saturday, Oct. 29, and Sunday, Oct. 30, will be Weekend Warriors. On Saturday in honor of National Safety Month the Muncie Fire Department will provide a look inside a fire truck and the award winning Learn Not to Burn program will be available. Also on Sunday the Learn Not to Burn program will be open.
New members
Rob Weaver, Portland, was recently elected President of Arts Place in Portland for the 2005-06 term. He is director of John Jay Center for Learning, has been a member of Arts Place since 1987 and a board member since 2002.
Other officers elected were Peter Minnich, Berne, first vice president; James Forcum, Portland, second vice president; Elaine Broering, St. Henry, Ohio, treasurer; and Charles Hein, Fort Recovery, secretary.
Attends conference
Shea Briar recently attended the National Young Leader’s Conference in Washington, D.C. He is a senior at the Academy of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the son of Bob and Tracy (Chalfant) Hoevel of Kailua, Hawaii. He is the grandson of Jay County residents Joel and Sharon Taylor.
Babysitter’s training
The American Red Cross will offer a Babysitter’s Training course on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
It will be held at the Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross, 325 E. Washington St. in Muncie. The course is for teens ages 13 to 16 and incorporates fun activities, exciting videos, lively discussions and real-life problem solving situations.
The cost is $40. Registration is required.

Wabash College updates
Wil Goodrich has pledged Kappa Sigma social fraternity at Wabash College in Crawfordsville. He is a freshman and the son of John and Sarona Goodrich, rural Portland.
Sophomore David Johnston has been elected secretary of Sigma Chi fraternity. He is the son of Richard and Patricia Johnston, Portland.
Senior Andrew Wells has been elected House Manager at Sigma Chi fraternity. His parents are J.C. and Nancy Wells, Portland.

Dakota Suman, who was the theme winner in the baby contest at Bryant Loblolly Days is the daughter of Jason and Crystal Suman.[[In-content Ad]]
