Winners named at Fort Harvest Jubilee
Taking Note
Below is a list of winners for events held at the Fort Recovery Harvest Jubilee.
Pie baking contest winners were Linda Lennartz for fruit pie with a caramel apple pecan pie; Carol Ranly for crème pie with a butterscotch pie; Mary Pat Zitter for specialty for a pecan pie. Each winner received $25.
Ronnie Matthews, of Fort Recovery, was the winner of the Atomic Wing Eating contest. He received $100 and free wings for one year at Buffalo Wings and Rings in Portland.
Dave Milligan, Portland, won first place in the Rib Cookoff and Bob Westgerdes, Fort Recovery, won second place.
Kiddie Tractor Pull winners in the 31 to 49 pound division were Blake, Kyle and Carissa Will – first place; Benjamin Kaufman – second place; Liv Dollar, Richie and Shonda Vogel – third place.
Winners in the 50 to 75 pound division were Rylee, Kevin and Angie Will – first place; Kendra, Curt and Amy Dues – second place; Rachel, Ryan and Lori Thien – third place.
Winners in the 76-100 pound division were Will, Todd and Michele Homan – first place; Gavin, Shawn and Kristi Thobe – second place; Payton, Shawn and Kristi Thobe – third place.
Hosts needed
Pacific Intercultural exchange is looking for host families for foreign exchange students for the coming school year.
The organization will place 15-18-year-old students from a variety of countries, including Germany, Mexico, Brazil and China. Those interested should visit 222.pieusa.org or call (866) 546-1402.
Dean’s lists
Amanda Alberson and Megan Huntsman, both of Portland, were named to the spring dean’s list at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnnais, Ill.
Holly Rittenhouse, Portland, was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Manchester College in North Manchester. She is majoring in elementary education.
Cynthia Muhlenkamp, Portland, was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Marian University in Indianapolis. She is a marketing major.
Three area students were named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Wabash College in Crawsfordsville.
Jared Valentine is a freshman and the son of Mark and Marianne Valentine.
Kaleb Hemmelgarn is a junior and the son of Doug and Karen Hemmelgarn.
Austin Flynn is a senior and the son of Stephen and Carlotta Flynn, Redkey.
Three Portland students were named to the dean’s list for the winter quarter at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute.
Jessica Muhlenkamp is the daughter of Allen and Theresa Muhlenkamp. She is a senior majoring in civil engineering.
Jacob Schmidt is the son of Gary and Diane Schmidt. He is a senior majoring in computer science.
Donald Michael is the son of Don and Lisa Michael. He is a sophomore majoring in civil engineering.
Two Portland residents were named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Huntington University.
Zachary Keller is a junior majoring in mathematics education.
Rachel Osterholt is a sophomore majoring in accounting.
Kylie Anne Wellman, Bryant, was named to the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation dean’s list for the spring semester at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Kristen Joy Steiner graduated from Goshen College on May 1 with a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology/biochemistry. A 2007 graduate of South Adams High School, she is the daughter of George and Anna Steiner, Geneva.
Three area students graduated from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Jessica Muhlenkamp, Portland, earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. She is the daughter of Allen and Theresa Muhlenkamp.
Ian Thomas, Pennville, earned a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering and is a graduate student at Rose-Hulman.
Mitchell Thomas, Pennville, earned a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering and is a graduate student at Rose-Hulman.
They are the sons of Randy and Jo Thomas.
Austin Flynn, Redkey, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Wabash College in Crawfordsville with a degree in English. While attending Wabash, he was designated a Mackintosh Fellow, received Distinction in English, was named a member of Phi Beta Kappa, received the Walter L. Fertig Prize in English, the Ruth Margaret Farber Award in English and was published in several Wabash publications.
He plans to attend graduate school at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, to pursue a master’s degree and PhD in English. Austin is a 2007 graduate of Jay County High School, where he was the Lilly Scholarship recipient. He is the son of Steve and Carlotta Flynn, Redkey.
Band show
The Winchester Band Aides will host the annual marching band show on Saturday, July 30, beginning at 7 p.m.
There will be 16 bands performing at the football field at Winchester Community High School, 700 N. Union St. Tickets will be available at the show.
